Sonic Adventure was terrible. Should be Sonic Adventure 2 in there instead. Can't believe it's not on the list.
  • Redeater - August 16, 2012 12:58 p.m.

I thought the same thing! It improved almost everything that was wrong with SA1 even if it was still flawed.
  • Fuzunga - August 16, 2012 6:05 p.m.

I personally hated the open world thing and the game was buggy as hell.
  • Cyberninja - August 16, 2012 12:44 p.m.

I mostly agree with this list Sonic Adventure was the best 3D sonic before Generations came along (with the exception of big hes the reason it wasn't the best game ever). also move rush before heroes and then replace heroes with colors.
  • shawksta - August 16, 2012 12:44 p.m.

Surprised Colors isn't in this list. Im on a bench, I liked Sonic Adventure and I never really understood what makes 2 a much better game (it's coming soon to XBLA so I'll see then) Both Mario and Sonic are awesome, hopefully we'll see a nice crossover besides the Olympics. It's gonna be hard to make a gameplay mechanic that can make them balanced but we can dream :P

I thought Sonic Adventure 2 was more enjoyable (except the Knuckles and Rouge stages). SA2 nailed the Sonic and Shadow stages and the rest were passable until you got back to Sonic/Shadow. I still like SA 1, but I thought 2 was a tad better.

I have to agree that the re-release of Sonic CD is the definitive version...I got a bit nostalgic a while back and, seeing as I had a Sega CD and only one game to play on it, I ordered a copy of Sonic CD. It was so choppy I could barely believe that Sonic was the fastest thing alive...but the re-release fixes that quite easily. But, as with this list, Sonic 2 is and always will be my favorite Sonic game, followed closely by Sonic 3 & Knuckles. Or maybe Sonic 2 & Knuckles...or just plain Sonic & know, let's just say my second favorite is "& Knuckles."
  • El Dango - August 16, 2012 2:20 p.m.

Damn right Sonic 2 is the best one! Heroes is complete garbage though, but seeing as there's only like four good Sonic games (this top four to be specific), I guess it's impossible to not let some rotten apples on here.
  • Scammeleon - August 16, 2012 2:50 p.m.

I can't help but feel Sonic Advance should be on here somewhere...
  • aspen-fontaine - August 16, 2012 5:24 p.m.

I think Sonic The Hedgehog (Genesis) should be #1 :3 I love that one, or Sonic The Hedgehog 3 :)
  • Rev3nge - August 16, 2012 5:33 p.m.

I have to slightly disagree. While I definitely give many kudos for recognizing Sonic 3 & Knuckles as a game in itself, I personally will always hold it as my all-time favorite. I definitely validate your argument you pose as to why Sonic 2 should be first, but on my list it goes second. While it set the mark for classic Sonic gameplay, it was actually my least favorite of the classics growing up. Now, before I start getting all sorts of criminally hateful replies, having matured over the years has brought me to appreciate the entry. CD gets bumped down to 3, but as a GAme I didn't play until late last year after it's release on XBLA I now see what all the hype is about. Also, to hell with all you guys asking about colors. That was a bastardization to the series as much of the Wii Sonic games have been. You want an entry to replace Heroes? i don't know if you can classify this one since it technically doesn't include Sonic himself, but what about Knuckles Chaotix for the Sega 32X? I've never met anyone that's played that game that doesn't appreciate it's creative gameplay and revolutionary (for its time) graphics. Plus, it gave us a look into a separate side of the Mobius universe, and introduced us to such great characters as Vector and Espio, both of which being cult favorites. That game would probably go as high as 5 or 6 on my list.

i cant understand why sonic adventure is there, but sonic adventure 2 battle isnt... sa2b is one of the best games i ever played, with super mario land, super mario 64, sonic 2 and super mario bros 3
  • christopher-hansen - August 16, 2012 6:13 p.m.

I really don't get why people consider Sonic 2 to be the best Sonic game. I think Sonic the Hedgehog (Genesis) is the best game, simply because it is the real Sonic concept, the original thing, the first. Just like 1985 Super Mario Bros. (Excluding Doneky Kong, of course, in wich Mario was not reeeally Mario, he was called Jumpman)
  • Turbobison - August 16, 2012 6:21 p.m.

Man, I do agree with this list. I'm a huge fan of Sonic 2. I think top down, Sonic 2 is the best one. The music is fantastic, the level designs are awesome, and adding Tails made it fantastic. I would put Sonic: Dark Chronicles on the list, but still great job.
  • san0ake - August 16, 2012 6:22 p.m.

Another great article as always Justin. As I've said before, for me Sonic 3 is superior to Sonic 2, but I've made my peace with the fact that I'm the only one who thinks that way. BTW, I've been listening to your podcasts while I work in a game developing company in Japan lately. It's something inexplicably great (and somehow bizarre) to create games while listening to someone talk about them. Cheers.

I cannot agree more with the decision of sonic the hedgehog 2 at #1. The game was it's best in the genesis era and its very sad to say but I doubt that it will ever be as great as it was back then. That being said, sonic the hedgehog 2 introduced tails, super sonic, and had some of the best levels I had ever played in any sonic game. So that's my opinion.
  • ThatGamerDude - August 16, 2012 6:36 p.m.

I like this list as I still think Sonic 2 is the best Sonic game still (However Sonic 3 and Knuckles follow very closely behind). However, I would've maybe replaced Sonic Rush with Sonic Advance 2. Sonic Advance 2 in my mind, is the definitive handheld Sonic experience. It offered the best experience out of all the handheld Sonic games in terms of what Sonic was originally designed for, speed. The difficulty was just right with early levels like Leaf Forest and Hot Crater providing high-speed sequences without interruption while later levels toned it down much less but made-up for it by implementing ingenious platforming segments.
  • Cynos_Gohegdae - August 16, 2012 7:05 p.m.

I was hoping to see Sonic Adventure 2 up there on the list somewhere. That with it creating the plot for like 3 future Sonic games from it.
  • Errrrbo - August 16, 2012 8:25 p.m.

Sonic Adventure 2 isn't on this list? That's easily the best reviewed 3D game. It has an 89 on Metacritic. Sonic Heroes doesn't deserve to be there.
  • Crabhand - August 17, 2012 12:31 a.m.

Hm... I would have put Sonic Generations higher on the list, but it is still there so it isn't a big deal. Sonic Advance should have probably been on instead of Sonic Heroes, and I think Adventure 2: Battle was better than Adventure. Cool list though.
