Armored Core 4 - virgin hands-on

We give a series newcomer control of a huge robot and document the results

When a series has 10 or so games under its belt, and more on the way, one might imagine that there aren’t many seasoned gamers who haven’t given it a go at some point in their lives. Yet, as we prepared for the newest entry in the Armored Core series – Armored Core 4 - we stumbled upon just such a gamer lurking in our midst. A curious specimen, to be sure. After some briefly probing the veracity of his claims (which totally did not involve mocking him, questioning his gamerhood, or actually probing him), we decided that this was an excellent opportunity for some good ol’ fashioned scientific inquiry.

Hypothesis: An experienced gamer with absolutely no Armored Core experience will be able to grasp the basics of AC gameplay, but will encounter severe difficulty with the in-depth mech customization menu and be unable to progress past early levels.

Materials: PS3 & necessary cables, Sixaxis controller, Armored Core 4 pre-release review build, Armored Core 4 Manual, TV, Desk chair

Procedure: We sat the test subject down in the chair in front of the TV and fired up Armored Core 4. Subject was given controller and acted autonomously from then on. We monitored the subject’s facial expressions, physical demeanor, and gameplay, and stopped the experiment when the subject became exhausted and irritable.
