Check out the first trailer for The Fifth Element director's next movie and try to keep calm

Luc Besson, director of the much-loved The Fifth Element, is ready to give us our first look at his next movie, Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets. And yes, it is a long name, but don't let that bother you, because this looks like a blend of Blade Runner, Avatar, and just about every other sci-fi movie on the planet - which is to say it looks very, very cool:

There's obviously quite a bit of CG being employed here, but I like that there also seems to be a good amount of practical effects, particularly when it comes to some of the aliens. I'm less sold on the ‘conventionally attractive teenage white kids save the universe’ plot, if only because it feels a bit overplayed at this point (see: The Hunger Games, Maze Runner, and Divergent franchises). Still, I'm confident in Besson's ability to make an entertaining, if not visually stunning, cinematic experience.

Directed by Luc Besson and starring Dane DeHaan, Cara Delevingne, Ethan Hawke, and Clive Owen, Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets opens in the UK and US on July 21, 2017.
