PS3 automatic downloads no longer exclusive to PS Plus

Sony will release a new PS3 update today which expands the console’s automatic downloads feature to all PSN users. Once PS3 firmware version 4.50 is installed, console owners will be able to make use of the feature that enables the system to automatically download software updates and PlayStation Store purchases.

Users can set a two hour time interval for their PS3 to turn on from standby mode and check for updates as well as content to be automatically downloaded. This ability was previously restricted to PlayStation Plus subscribers.

Today's update also introduces the ability for data to be transferred from PS3 to Vita over Wi-Fi or an Ethernet connection, eliminating the need to use a USB cable. Additionally, new options for Trophy privacy settings allow users to set which awards are visible to other players.
