The 3DS is already out in Japan, but it seems Nintendo still hasn't quite finalized its plans for digital downloads over the new portable system. One new emerging detail is that most, but not all, of the existing DSiWare titles will be available through the 3DS's eShop.
For those DSiWare games that are brought over, DSi owners will be able to re-download or transfereverything they purchased, provided those games are available. Once your existing DSiWare games are on the 3DS, you will have a limited number of transfers for each, but no limit on thenumber of games you can bring over.Beyond DSiWare, other content will greet users once the eShop arrives as part ofa large system updatein May.
"We have Virtual Console games," said Scibetta, which will include classic games from other platforms like Game Boy and Game Gear. There will also be other retro titles remastered in 3D, "Anything that's rendered in 3D, converted into 3D, is called 3D Classics."
However, there's still the issue of original downloadable games created specifically for the 3DS. Scibetta said "we don't have any other terminology yet," so it's unknown if there will be a "3DSWare" channel or exactly how Nintendo plans to distribute brand new downloadable 3DS titles.
It looks like Nintendo is still finalizing its eShop plans, which is rather bizarre considering the hardware is finished, out and in people's hands. If you're serious about an online presence, shouldn't you have this stuff ready to go? Even Wii launched with a handful of Virtual Console games.
