Sega isn't "abandoning" physical games: president reminds everyone "we used to develop consoles," but says it's eyeing PC gaming in an increasingly digital future
"We're seeing an increase in the number of people playing on PC"
Sega's president Shuji Utsumi has discussed his company's position on the digital versus physical games debate. He says that while Japanese culture focuses on physical media, the rising global popularity of PC gaming means the company needs to emphasize improving its digital releases.
In an interview with Famitsu, that's been translated by GamesRadar+, Utsumi talks about how Sega is approaching what could potentially be an all digital future. "With regards to what we call 'full games' on both console and PC, we think the shift towards digital titles is key," he says. "Of course consoles are important, but at the moment, we're seeing an increase in the number of people playing on PC."
Some consoles are difficult to purchase in many parts of the world due to a number of factors including import fees, exchange rates and licensing disputes. However, the vast array and variety of PCs produced means it's a more accessible gaming platform for people from many different countries.
"Even in regions where consoles aren't commonly available, there are a lot of people who are able to play on PC," Utsumi says. "I think it's important to strengthen our digital products in order to develop this market. [Japan] has a culture of physical media, but I think it's necessary that we're conscious of digital content in order to become more global."
Sega isn't ready to give up on physical games and embrace an entirely digital future, but it will be keeping a watchful eye on the digital market. "We used to develop consoles, and of course, we still have a fondness for physical culture," he says. "So rather than completely abandoning it, we are currently considering the important elements of digital media, and simultaneously trying to make a shift."
