These Pokemon Go Mega Gengar Counters will help you catch one of, if not the, best Ghost-type Pokemon in all of Pokemon Go as it returns to Raids near you.

At the time of this writing, Mega Gengar will appear in Mega Raids in Pokemon Go starting Friday, July 22 until Sunday, July 31. For those nine days, Pokemon Go trainers can battle and catch as many Mega Gengar as possible to earn Pokemon Go Mega Energy needed to perform Mega Evolution.

Since the last time we wrote about Mega Gengar in Pokemon Go there have been some exciting additions to the game, especially in the Mega department.

That’s where this guide comes in. We’ll break down the best counters for Mega Gengar in Pokemon Go as well as dive deep into its movepool and what to look out for.

We've also got some Pokemon Go Dialga Raid Counters, another pokemon returning to raids at the same time.

Pokemon Go Mega Gengar Counters

Mega Gengar is a Ghost and Poison-type Pokemon making it weak to Psychic, Ground, Ghost and Dark-type attacks.

While Mega Gengar has quite a few weaknesses, the available Mega Pokemon only caters to Ghost and Dark types. This is especially true with the Dark-type as there are currently three Dark-type Megas that trainers can bring into battle.

Of course only one is allowed at one time, but any of the three Dark-type Megas should be the foundation for a team full of Dark types to take down Mega Gengar.

Mega Houndoom and Mega Gyarados’ Dark typing and Dark-type moves make them the premier attackers against Mega Gengar. Not only that, but the ability to power up the Dark-type moves of all Pokemon in your and other trainers’ party is great for taking down Mega Gengar as fast as possible.

Mega Absol is the newer of these three and brings powerful Dark-type moves of its own. It may not have the bulk of Houndoom or Gyarados, but it still has a place against Mega Gengar.

Trainers can bring their own Mega Gengar into battle, but it’ll be a double-edged sword with Gengar being weak to Ghost-type attacks and trainers will face off against plenty of those.

Other non-Mega options include Tyranitar, Darkrai and Ground types like Landorus and Garchomp.

Here’s a list of great options and counters to take into battle against Mega Gengar in Pokemon Go:

Pokemon Go Mega Gengar Moveset

Mega Gengar has a variety of different attacks it can use in Pokemon Go.

Of course, it’ll have access to Ghost moves like Hex and Shadow Punch, but will also have the Dark-type attack Sucker Punch. Dark types should not have a problem tanking any of these moves, but bringing in any Ghost or Psychic-type will spell trouble for trainers.

As for its Charged Attacks, Mega Gengar can use the Ghost-type move Shadow Ball, the Poison-type attack Sludge Bomb and the Fighting-type move Focus Blast.

Trainers need to be wary of Focus Blast as it is can deal super effective damage against many Dark types they bring into battle. It also gives Mega Gengar a super effective attack against Steel, Rock, Ice and Normal types.

Any trainers that want to bring in Mega Kangaskhan, as it resists Gengar’s Ghost attacks -- and has access to super effective moves -- may want to consider it. Obstagoon and Tyranitar are four times weak to Focus Blast so be sure to check the recommended team page before selecting your team.

If it suggests Psychic types, Mega Gengar will likely have Focus Blast. If Ghost types and Ground types appear then it will likely have Sludge Bomb as they resist it. Trainers that see plenty of Dark types being suggested then it’s likely that Mega Gengar has Shadow Ball.

Use that to your advantage when selecting your team. Here’s every Fast and Charge Attack that Mega Gengar can have in Pokemon Go:
