Nvidia cuts Shield price ahead of June 27 launch

Nvidia has cut the price of upcoming handheld system Shield by $50 ahead of a newly announced launch date of June 27. Just last month, Nvidia said Shield would release in June priced at $349. Consumers who have already pre-ordered Shield will pay its new $299 price.

Nvidia explained on its blog: "We've heard from thousands of gamers that if the price was $299, we'd have a home run. So we're changing the price of Shield to $299. We want to get Shield into the hands of as many gamers as possible.”

Announced in January, Shield is powered by a Tegra 4 processor and sports an Xbox 360-like controller with a 5" 720p touch screen attached. Nvidia claims that the internal battery allows for 5-10 hours of gameplay and up to 24 hours of video. The device also allows for streaming of games from a PC through a local network and has support for Steam’s Big Picture mode. Games confirmed for release on the platform include Double Fine’s Costume Quest and Broken Age, and Adhesive Games’ mech shooter Hawken.
