Knightmare to return at Edinburgh Festival

The classic kids TV show Knightmare is being Kickstarted now

If you know what connects the words “Treguard”, “Sidestep” and “Ooh, nasty”, then it’s a fair guess that your early years were spent in front of the TV watching interactive game show Knightmare .

Chances are you’ll also be excited to hear there are plans to reopen Lord Fear’s dungeon for a live stage show at the Edinburgh Festival this year.

Starring comedians Paul Flannery (Dungeon Master Treguard), Tom Bell (Lord Fear) and Amee Smith (Mistress Goody), Knightmare Live will be an immersive theatrical adventure where members of the public – donning the famous Helmet of Justice – are guided by two comedians through the mighty dungeon. The blue screen and virtual reality is gone but all your favourites will be there: riddles, magical characters, monsters and spell casting.

Created with the blessing of the show’s creator Tim Child, we can only hope Knightmare Live will be as difficult as the original, which aired between 1987 and 1994. Only eight teams over eight series conquered the dungeon.

To help build all new sets and puppets – don’t worry, the corridor of blades still features – the Knightmare Live team has launched a Kickstarter . So if you want to hear Treguard utter the ominous words, “Welcome watchers of illusion to the castle of confusion” again, then you can donate.

Knightmare Live will be at the Gilded Balloon as part of the Edinburgh Festival between 31 July and 25 August. If successful, there are plans to take it on tour around theUK, so we can all sidestep into the theatre and relive our childhood.
