Is Jupiter's Legacy season 2 heading to Netflix? Everything we know so far

Jupiter's Legacy season 1 is streaming on Netflix, and it ends on a massive cliffhanger – leaving us with plenty of questions that need answers. It also jumps between two timelines, revealing how superhero team the Union first formed, and then showing us how the second generation of heroes are struggling to deal with their legacy and sky-high standards.

We've rounded up everything we know so far about Jupiter's Legacy season 2, and while there's been no official word from Netflix, it's not looking good for a direct second season of the superhero show. Co-creator Mark Millar revealed that the next step is a live-action spinoff, but did suggest that there's a chance Jupiter's Legacy could be back sometime in the future. 

With that in mind, we've looked at the comics to try and glean what might be next should a Jupiter's Legacy season 2 ever happen.

Will there be a Jupiter's Legacy season 2?

Bad news – it doesn't look like we'll be seeing Jupiter's Legacy season 2 anytime soon, if at all. Though Netflix hasn't confirmed anything, co-creator Mark Millar posted a message about the future of the franchise to Twitter, revealing that the cast has been released and a spinoff series is on the way instead. 

"Given where we're going next, we've made the tough call of letting our incredible cast out of their show commitment as we continue to thoughtfully develop all realms of the Jupiter's Legacy saga," Millar wrote. "We're confident we'll return to it later and just want to say thanks to you guys for your continued support and to the cast and crew who made this look so great." 

The spinoff, Supercrooks, will focus on the villains of the universe, and is based on the comic book series of the same name by Millar and Leinil Francis Yu. There's also an animated adaptation on the way, which will arrive to Netflix this year. 

On Supercrooks, Millar wrote: "I've been asked a lot about what we're planning next with this world and the answer is to see what the super-villains are getting up to. I've always loved crime stories from Scorsese to Tarantino and super-villains are always the most fun part of any superhero story. To do something exclusively focused on the villains they fight just feels incredibly fresh as we explore what it's like to be a bad guy in a world crawling with good guys who want to put you in jail. 

"Jupiter's Legacy is a vast and rich space with lots of characters to mine, and so I'm happy to share that our next step here is a live-action version of the Supercrooks comic I created with Leinil Francis Yu a few years back."

Deadline also report that Jupiter's Legacy won't be continuing, but, according to their sources, could return "in a different iteration." 

On balance, it seems unlikely that we'll be seeing a live-action season 2 with the same cast anytime soon. Millar's statement does leave the door open, though, so we've looked at the source material to see what might happen next if the show ever were to return. 

What might happen in Jupiter's Legacy season 2?

Since Jupiter's Legacy didn't directly adapt the events of the comics, if a second season does ever happen, or the story continues in the spin-off, there's a lot of the story left to tell. Major comic book spoilers ahead!

Season 1 ended with Sheldon and Brandon apparently reconciled – yet things get dark very quickly in the comics. In fact, Brandon ends up teaming with Walter, and they take on The Utopian – then they impose their own global regime. Meanwhile, Hutch and Chloe have a child who has superpowers of his own, and a resistance starts to form against Brandon and Walter.

As for what could happen in the other timeline that runs through Jupiter's Legacy, showing the Union in their younger years, there's lots of potential there, too. For one thing, we can find out why Skyfox left the Union. In the source material, his ex-girlfriend getting together with Walter was the breaking point.

Then there's Blue Bolt, who is entirely absent from the present-day plot in season 1. In the comics, he was subject to blackmail from J. Edgar Hoover over his sexuality.

Plus, Fitz has passed the mantle of the Flare to his daughter Petra after a life-changing injury in the present day, so we'll probably find out more about his time as the hero in possible future installments. Sheldon and Grace haven't gotten together just yet, either, so that could be another avenue to explore in a potential season 2 and beyond.
