Disney composer Alan Menken is working on Mrs Doubtfire: The Musical

A new musical version of Mrs Doubtfire is in the works, with Disney composer Alan Menken set to pen the show's songs.

Following in the footsteps of other screen-to-stage adaptations like Priscilla, Queen Of The Desert and The Commitments, the stage version of Mrs Doubtfire is being masterminded by Harvey Fierstein.

Fierstein knows a thing or two about the story, having memorably appeared in the movie as Frank, the make-up artist brother of Daniel (Robin Williams).

“It’s going very well, it’s in its early stages, and that’s probably all I can say,” Menken told Entertainment Weekly. “We’re really enjoying working on it.”

Menken is working on the musical with David Zippel, whom he worked with previously on Hercules.

Menken was also responsible for the many great songs throughout the Mouse House's '90s resurgence, including The Little Mermaid, Beauty & The Beast and Aladdin.

Last year, a movie sequel, Mrs Doubtfire 2, was shelved in the wake of Robin Williams' tragic death.

Given that Fierstein was responsible for creating Mrs Doubtfire on-screen (remember that amazing 'Luck Be A Lady' montage?), we can't think of anybody more appropriate to continue the story.
