Catherine Hardwicke will not be directing Twilight sequel New Moon.
Despite her recent comments on plans for the new film, Summit Entertainment has announced that it is not bringing Hardwicke back for the follow-up.
According to Variety’s story, the reason for the surprise move is one of timing – Summit wanted Moon ready to start shooting this November, but Hardwicke wanted more time to work on Melissa Rosenberg’s script.
Hardwicke also references the schedule in her comment on the news: “I am sorry that due to timing I will not have the opportunity to direct New Moon. Directing Twilight has been one of the great experiences of my life, and I am grateful to the fans for their passionate support of the film. I wish everyone at Summit the best with the sequel - it is a great story."
Truth?
But shortly before the official announcement, Hollywood’s rumour mill kicked into high gear with word from gossip maven Nikki Finke that Hardwicke was being replaced because Summit found her tough to deal with.
According to the traditional ”insider sources”, it was the film’s cinematographer and editor who “saved” the film.
The truth likely lies somewhere in between, but Summit is now on a hunt for a new helmer.
