Assassin's Creed creative director wants to change up setting, characters

Assassin's Creed fans won't see another trilogy depicting the same character and historical period. Eurogamer spoke with Assassin's Creed III creative director Alex Hutchinson about the future of the series after its October 30 release.

"I like having the choice that, if people like the current guy, we can bring him back later," Hutchinson said. "We just don't want to be boxed in where we're always stuck with one character, or where we always have to reboot everything. We want to go back and forth."

Assassin's Creed III Liberation for PlayStation Vita depicts an entirely new protagonist, whereas the series' previous portable entries focused on side adventures of pre-existing characters. Hutchinson said Assassin's Creed can easily change settings and figures while remaining a cohesive annualized series. He intends to exploit that, saying Assassin's Creed Revelations underperformed as it was "too familiar."

While some players might be burnt out on main character Desmond Miles, whose modern narrative ties the historical arcs together, Hutchinson believes it will all come back around in his favor.

"I think when all's said and done, Desmond is one of those characters you'll like once he's had his moment in the sun. No one really liked Luke Skywalker during Star Wars. But when it finished you realized he was a 'noob' with a character arc. So in retrospect I think it'll work."
