5) Lenne + Shuyin (Final Fantasy X-2, PS2)
Who they are: A long-dead summoner-songstress and the evil lookalike of Tidus from Final Fantasy X.
Why they're the best: Tragic love is to teenagers as Mountain Dew is to Halo 3: the sugary bliss that’ll stop your heart as surely as it'll get your blood pumping. Lenne and Shuyin were tragically separated during a war that took place a thousand years before the events of the game. Lenne was forced to the frontlines, and Shuyin - thinking his love was going to bite it - plotted to steal a colossal mechanical horror called Vegnagun and use it to defeat the other side and save Lenne. Apparently, using Vegnagun requires the sacrifice of lots of lives, so Lenne - the selfless one - talked Shuyin out of this rash action at the last second, and both were gunned down in a blaze of glory by Vegnagun's keepers. You can watch it in this video:
Obviously, Shuyin doesn’t go down for good, since he’s still around for most of X-2. But if you’re tough enough to handle all the Japanese pop in the world rolled into one video game, you get to see the lovers reunited when you throw down with Shuyin and send him to the afterlife to be with his true love.
What they teach us: Dying together is hot.
