Ah, Rey. When you’re not being harassed for Star Wars spoilers (opens in new tab), you’re part of speculation about who your parents are (opens in new tab) or just what exactly happened in your Force vision (opens in new tab) in Star Wars: The Force Awakens (opens in new tab). It’s clear that Rey is the key to some sort of mystery and, in fairness, Disney don’t help themselves, especially as they’ve just added a reference to a “mysterious connection” and a “strange connection” on both Kylo Ren and Rey’s profile pages on the Star Wars site. What could that mean? Here are the best theories from around the web…
Major props to Heroic Hollywood (opens in new tab) for spotting the Star Wars Databank’s latest edit but, if you want wild and wonderful theories you go to Reddit. User blahhh11 (opens in new tab) breaks the trend though and puts forward the nice, simple idea that the “mysterious connection” is a Force bond. That would certainly put to bed any lingering family relation conspiracy theories…
Han Solo is Kylo Ren AND Rey's father. WHAT?
…but we love conspiracy theories here at GamesRadar+. Bustle (opens in new tab) have a doozy about Han getting jiggy with another woman and, 9 months later, Rey is born. This would make Rey and Kylo half-siblings. It would certainly explain why everyone is a bit lost on who exactly Rey is and why she starts off in the middle of nowhere in The Force Awakens. At the very least, it would make Kylo killing his father a little more reasonable, right? Guys?
Is Rey a Palpatine? WHAAAAT?
How about the connection being a nod to Rey leaning towards the Dark Side? Hey, it’s not beyond the realms of possibility: PopSugar have some compelling evidence (opens in new tab) that Rey is not a Skywalker, not a Solo but, in fact, a Palpatine and that Rey and Kylo Ren will be continuing the Palpatine/Skywalker master and apprentice lineage. Their theory? Rey’s fighting style is strangely similar to the Emperor’s and her anger in battle against Kylo is a surefire sign of letting the hate flow through her. Also, if Luke isn’t Rey’s daddy then it makes sense for it to be someone important in a galaxy far, far away.
What if Luke fathered two children: Kylo and Rey. WHAAA-- (you get the picture)
What if Rey is Luke’s child and… so is Kylo Ren?! No, Leia and Luke didn’t do anything gross (A New Hope covered that base), Radio Times (opens in new tab) reports on a theory that Luke had a child with an as-yet-unnamed woman and, fearing the repercussions of a Jedi child, gave little Ben to Han and Leia. It would certainly explain why the Sith Lord was named Ben and gives a little more logic to Kylo Ren sensing Rey in her Force vision.
What do you make of these theories? Do you have any amazing ones of your own to share? Let us know in the comments!
