Seven films still in Oscar make-up race

If you’d have told us a couple of months ago that The Santa Clause 3: The Escape Clause would end up being in the Oscar race, we probably would have kicked you in the shin for being so silly.

But it’s made it to the next round of contenders for best make-up, alongside Apocalypto, The Prestige, X-Men: The Last Stand, Click, Pan's Labyrinth and Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest.

Though, to be honest, we don’t expect it to get much further. On 20 January, the Oscar make-up award nominating committee will be asked to view ten minutes from each movie, to create a final shortlist of three films.

Our money’s on Apocalypto, The Prestige and Pan's Labyrinth, but who knows? Maybe we could still be hearing ‘And the Oscar goes to... The Santa Clause 3!” on 25 February, when the awards are presented at the Kodak Theatre at Hollywood & Highland.

Nominations for the 79th Annual Academy Awards will be announced 23 January.
