A few weeks back, Marvel and Sony struck a deal to include Spider-Man in Marvel’s Cinematic Universe. Alongside that Internet-breaking headline came the news that Andrew Garfield would not be reprising the role.
Since then, early buzz suggested that Sony was aiming to introduce a much younger iteration of Spidey into the MCU. Now, there’s been a new development twist.
On last night’s Meet The Movie Press podcast, The Wrap’s Jeff Sneider offered up some of his insider knowledge on who that could be:
“Listen, this is not set in stone guys, but I’m telling you right now, Spider-Man’s not gonna be white. Spider-Man is not going to be white … I am 95% sure. Spider-Man’s gonna be, most likely, black. But there’s a chance he could also be Latino. 95% sure, not white.”
This rumor points towards an entirely different iteration of the galavanting do-gooder . “I don’t think it’s gonna be Peter Parker,” he goes on to say, leaving the door wide open for Miles Morales to pick up the mantle.
The Black Hispanic teen took up the role of Spider-Man in the Ultimate Comics storyline after the death of Peter Parker. Years back, Garfield even campaigned for Morales to feature in The Amazing Spider-Man movies in a passing-of-the-torch scenario.
Spider-Man is expected to make his MCU debut in Captain America: Civil War on May 6, 2016 followed by a solo movie on July 28, 2017.
