Before Kurt Russell saddles up for Quentin Tarantino's snow-capped western The Hateful 8 later this year, he's on the prowl through the frontier in Craig Zahler's Bone Tomahawk. If early reviews out of Fantastic Fest are any indication, the horror and gore glimpsed in this first trailer is just the beginning of one heck of a genre romp.
Russell stars as Sheriff Franklin Hunt, a lawman who ventures out into the wilds to locate a missing woman. Rallying together a group of locals, including deputy Chicory (Richard Jenkins), the woman's husband Arthur (Patrick Wilson), and a rather dashing chap called John Brooder (Matthew Fox), Hunt leads the group to almost certain death. Well, she is reportedly being held by a band of cave-dwelling cannibalistic troglodytes.
Coming across like a gore-fuelled take on The Searchers -- including more flesh-eating than John Wayne ever had to deal with -- this ought to assuage both western and horror fans. Bone Tomahawk opens in US theaters for a limited release and hits iTunes and VOD on October 23. While there's no confirmed UK release, if you're eager to catch it ASAP the film is screening at the London Film Festival on October 10.
