The intense top-down gunfighting of Hotline Miami smashes into the intricate operational planning of Payday and Rainbow Six Siege with Phantom Squad.
In a trailer shown off as part of FGS Live From Los Angeles, developer Ctrl Freak offered a look at how Phantom Squad can go one of two ways; perhaps you'll make an intricate plan, carefully executing it as you breach room after room on your way to your objective; or perhaps everything will go wrong at the first hurdle, and you'll be forced to improvise, adapt, and overcome on your way to success.
The inspiration of Hotline Miami is immediately apparent within Phantom Squad's top-down shooting, tasking you with clearing rooms of enemies while not getting cleared yourself. What's not borrowed from that iconic indie shooter, however, is Phantom Squad's planning stage, which allows you to map out your every move, carefully and cautiously making every step forward count.
Adding to the (potential) chaos is the fact that Phantom Squad lets you play in up to four-player co-op, in addition to solo play. You might be able to map out the perfect approach for yourself, but can you keep three of your friends' heads cool if your plan goes wrong?
Phantom Squad is currently scheduled for a launch later this year, but if you want to check it out - or to convince your friends - there's a demo available right now, so you can check it out for yourself.
