If you’re after a retro Resident Evil fix, upcoming survival horror game Ground Zero will scratch that terrifying itch

With its PS1-era graphics, Ground Zero looks like a horrifying, modern take on Resident Evil 2 and 3 as its Future Games Show Summer Showcase trailer shows off.

From developer Malformation Games, their debut project sees elite agent Seo-Yeon, trudge through the devastated streets of Busan, two months after a catastrophic meteor impact in South Korea. Sent to investigate what’s left of the city, Seo-Yeon and her Canadian partner find hideous monstrosities throughout the city, but it becomes clear that there’s a greater conspiracy to uncover.

As a survival horror game that mimics the pioneers of the genre, Ground Zero has a striking low-poly art style and uses fixed camera angles for that classic feel. It also features plenty of puzzles to solve that will help you learn more and work your way through the ruins of Busan, from its dense urban center to its ancient temples.

Exploring the city, you’ll of course come across plenty of the remaining corrupt creatures, but Seo-Yeon is an expertly trained soldier, so she’s a capable sharpshooter and hand-to-hand fighter. That means you can use various guns, like classic shotguns and close-range submachine guns, to take down the lurking horrors, but stabbing, kicking, and even stab-kicking thanks to a boot knife are all on the cards too.

However, if you want an even greater challenge, Ground Zero also has customizable difficulty options, additional game modes, and optional tank controls. There are also outfits to unlock and secret endings for the most dedicated to finding out the truth behind Busan’s destruction.

Ground Zero hasn’t got a precise release date just yet, so the best way to stay up to date is to wishlist the game on Steam.
