The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is here, and Mario creator Shigeru Miyamoto says it's finally allowed him to put "some meat" on an idea that he and Super Mario Galaxy game director Yoshiaki Koizumi discussed during the development of the 2007 game, but never actually "came to a conclusion" about.
Before we get into it, there are some implied spoilers below for The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, but we're not going to go into the full details in case you've not seen it yet. However, you might want to scroll with caution if you want to go into the new movie totally blind.
That idea surrounds Peach and Rosalina's "actual relationship," something that's been a mystery ever since the release of the 2007 Wii classic. Rosalina in general is a pretty mysterious character, and as with anything, folks have had their theories about her and how she might connect to other members of the Mario cast – namely, Peach. After all, the two of them have some very similar features (primarily, both having blond hair and blue eyes), and in Rosalina's Storybook in Galaxy, which depicts the backstory of the space princess, her mother bears a striking resemblance to the Mushroom Kingdom's ruler.
Up until now, though, Nintendo hasn't elaborated on if there's any actual connection between the two, or if it just has a penchant for creating blond ladies. I suppose there's not really been much room for big lore drops to have happened in their joint appearances racing against each other and playing all manner of sports. But that's now changed, and in a new interview with Forbes about The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, Miyamoto says he and Koizumi had previously discussed the pair's relationship when making the 2007 game – it just didn't go anywhere.
