Use the souls of animals and creatures to transform in hand-drawn 2D Metroidvania Barbarian Saga: The Beastmaster, coming Fall 2026
This one is inspired by classic ’80s and ’90s action titles, and you can really see it in the artstyle
Barbarian Saga: The Beastmaster is a warmly nostalgic, hand-drawn 2D Metroidvania that you'll be able to play yourself when it launches Fall 2026.
As part of FGS Live From GDC (which followed the Future Games Show Spring Showcase), developer Dormidin Studio has popped up with a new trailer to show the game in action. With an artstyle that immediately evokes pre 2000-era cartoons, any fans of He-Man will immediately get a shot of nostalgia.

Gameplay wise, there's plenty of side-to-side action as we see our protagonist swap between human and beast form as they take numerous foes to the cleaners. That's only a glimpse of what's to come, too, as playing the game allows you to collect the souls of animals and creatures to transform and progress in the adventure.
The ability to transform will be crucial to deal with the Metroidvania-inspired elements of the game, as you'll need the abilities of certain animals and creatures to get to certain parts of the map – be it an area you've run past previously, or something up ahead.
Here's the Steam blurb: "After the brief peace that followed the wars of the portals that devastated the country, new winds of war threaten its inhabitants when the new king of Imperia together with the Sacred Kingdom have started a war against non-humans, using the services of one of the Last Wizards of Arborea: Trece XIII and their generals, it is the moment of the prophecy, a chosen one will unite Men and beasts to bring peace."

I joined GamesRadar+ in May 2022 following stints at PCGamesN and PocketGamer.Biz, with some freelance for Kotaku UK, RockPaperShotgun, and VG24/7 thrown in for good measure. When I'm not running the news team on the games side, you'll find me putting News Editor duties to one side to play the hottest JRPG of 20 years ago or pillaging the depths of Final Fantasy 14 for a swanky new cloak – the more colourful, the better.
