Nothing's been set in stone yet, but Final Fantasy 7 Revelation DLC is on the table and director Naoki Hamaguchi is thinking about incorporating FF7's various spin-offs should fans want it loudly enough.
Square Enix is finally concluding its expansive remake of Final Fantasy 7 next year, but the third and final part of the trilogy doesn't include the entire Final Fantasy 7 story. Spin-off games like Dirge of Cerberus and the sequel movie Advent Children understandably fall outside of the remake series' scope... for now, at least.
Speaking to Famitsu, Hamaguchi says potential expansions for Final Fantasy 7 Revelation could happen if there's enough of an appetite from fans and if player demands are significant enough. (Thanks for the translation, Genki.)
The Remake series director then suggests the team is also considering ways to explore parts of the Final Fantasy 7 universe that weren't depicted in the original game, such as spin-off games. He doesn't name any names, but there's plenty of extended universe Final Fantasy 7 stories to choose from.
Dirge of Cerberus: Final Fantasy 7 is probably the most high-profile side game that we've yet to see folded into the modern remakes. Mostly set three years after the events of the base game, the somewhat notorious shooter focuses on the usually moody but still loveable Vincent Valentine.
Then there's the controversial animated movie Final Fantasy 7: Advent Children, a proper sequel that reintroduces Cloud, the entire gang, and main baddie Sephiroth for another fight. Though the scope of the film is perhaps a little too large to cram into a single expansion, it is a possibility.
When asked about the possibility of Final Fantasy 7 Revelation itself including links to Advent Children, Hamaguchi recently said players would need to wait and see for themselves "what the conclusion of the journey holds." Very coy indeed. The Remake trilogy so far has been very liberal in its retelling – or, rather, reimagining – of the original game, so its ending veering off course wouldn't surprise me in the slightest.
We'll see how it shakes out when Final Fantasy 7 Revelation launches early next year on PC, PS5, Nintendo Switch 2, and Xbox Series X|S simultaneously.
