Assassin's Creed Black Flag Resynced releases in July and has been "rebuilt from the ground up" with a reworked combat system, new quests and storylines, and more

Assassin's Creed Black Flag Resynced has been officially unveiled, and the release date for the long-awaited swashbuckling remake is under two months away.

To be exact, Black Flag Resynced launches on July 9, so there's really not long to wait. And, as shown in Ubisoft's big reveal showcase today, this isn't just a simple remaster to make things look a bit prettier – per Edward Kenway actor Matt Ryan, it's been "rebuilt from the ground up with the latest Anvil engine to deliver the most thrilling pirate adventure."

As for what's changed – beyond the "high resolution textures, enhanced lighting, strikingly detailed environments, and a new dynamic weather system" – the game's combat system has been "entirely reworked into an action-oriented experience. While wielding huge swords, pistols, and hidden blades, every move now plays a specific role with faster, more fluid attacks."

Parkour has also been given some TLC, as "you'll experience smooth and improved iconic parkour moves," including free drops and back ejects. What's more, tailing and eavesdropping missions have been "revamped," with it being noted that the immediate desynchronization that came with being discovered in the original was "a pretty big pain point." Now, the "action continues," but "your target will react, and you must adapt accordingly."

We can also expect "fresh quests and storylines," which Ryan notes include "new narrative arcs involving our old friends, Blackbeard and Stede." Creative director Paul Fu elaborates on this a bit further, saying that "no remake is complete without additional content, so we have added brand-new chapters and brand-new missions to the game, including a brand-new scene with Edward's wife Caroline."

Despite the changes, though, game director Richard Knight says that "from the start, the intention was clear: deliver a faithful and enriched experience grounded in what players loved." So, veteran fans have certainly been kept in mind, but there should still be new things to discover even if you've played the original 2013 game for hundreds of hours.

After literal years of leaks and rumors about the Black Flag remake, it almost feels a little strange to actually see it in an official capacity like this. Ubisoft is well aware of this ship's leakiness, of course – it even called the remake "gaming's worst-kept secret" when it announced this showcase, and it's really not wrong. Considering that whispers about the game have been circulating since 2023, it's quite a relief to see we don't have a massive further wait ahead of us to actually play it.

Assassin's Creed Black Flag Resynced is coming to PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S, and it's also getting a Collector's Edition starring an Edward Kenway figure, a notebook of the protagonist's diary entries, a cloth map, and a brooch.
