Assassin's Creed Black Flag Resynced: The Big Preview – New developer access and hands-on with the iconic pirate revival is pulling into harbor
The Big Preview | We ready a deep dive beneath Assassin's Creed Black Flag Resynced's waves, and prepare to crack open a bounty of access with Ubisoft
Assassin's Creed Black Flag Resynced already feels historic, and we're not just talking about it being set in the Age of Piracy. Originally the fourth numbered entry in the series, Black Flag quickly became a firm fan-favorite thanks to its swashbuckling action and sunny (though sometimes viciously stormy) Caribbean-set open world. After the divisive Assassin's Creed 3, it felt like a real return to form.
Now, Assassin's Creed Black Flag Resynced is on the way July 9, and it's the first proper remake Ubisoft has done for the series (though there have been several remasters). What does it mean to be 'Resynced'? We'll soon be able to roll up our silk sleeves to dig into just that, as we've gotten new developer access with the team at Ubisoft getting the new game shipshape, and gone hands-on with it for the first time. All will be revealed, lads. But for now, we hoist sails. Land spotted: it's Edward Kenway actor Matt Ryan.

Assassin's Creed Black Flag Resynced: The Big Preview
Not only does Assassin's Creed Black Flag Resynced bring back its cheeky rogue star, the great pirate Edward Kenway – but his original actor as well. We speak with the game's leading man, Matt Ryan (Constantine, Legends of Tomorrow), about putting the hood back on, the new story elements being added, and reflecting on how Black Flag has remained a fan favorite over the years.
Our chat with Matt Ryan is just the start, as we'll also be going hands-on with Assassin's Creed Black Flag Resynced for ourselves to see how it's been updated, test our muscle memory from many hours playing the original, and become Edward Kenway for ourselves. We'll have more to share from our hands-on preview with Black Flag Resynced later in the week, on May 21.
The 5 biggest changes coming to Assassin's Creed Black Flag Resynced: Definitely no Ship of Theseus, fans of the original will find much intact in this remake. But, big changes still promise to make this a slicker experience, from a completely reworked combat system, upgraded parkour and movement, and even new characters and quest lines that promise to add a lot more to one of our favorite pirate video games.
Our faith has been rewarded, and there's not much time left before we can leap right in, as Assassin's Creed Black Flag Resynced launches on July 9. Despite the game being hotly rumored for ages, not having to wait much longer now it's actually announced feels like a refreshing sea breeze. "Rebuilt from the ground up," this promises to be a faithful remake that also modernizes and expands. We can't wait to set sail.
