Dead Cells devs' new Castlevania game is just "the beginning," Konami says there are "numerous new products" in the works around the beloved Metroidvania series

After the series being dormant for around 13 years, Konami says Castlevania: Belmont's Curse is only the beginning.

The new PlayStation State of Play gave us a declaration from Konami that it is ready to enter a Capcom-style redemption arc. Not only is Metal Gear Solid 4 finally escaping PS3 jail, Silent Hill Townfall re-emerged looking to continue the series' hot streak, and finally, after years of me talking about it before every Nintendo Direct, State of Play, Xbox Showcase, or Geoff Keighley event, Castlevania is finally returning, and to make it even sweeter, its being developed by Evil Empire of Dead Cells and The Rogue Prince of Persia fame with Dead Cells developer Motion Twin listed as the "advisory game studio".

But just like when Silent Hill returned, Konami isn't putting all its eggs in one basket. In a post on the Castlevania website, the series production team says, "This year marks the 40th anniversary since the original 'Akumajō Dracula' first saw the light of day. In this commemorative year, 'Castlevania' will be revived." The post adds that "This is the beginning of numerous new products around Castlevania." Given how much a Bloodborne-inspired Castlevania action game would be a slam dunk, I'm very glad to hear this.

The Castlevania team also praised the developers behind the new entry, saying "We couldn’t think in[sic] other studios to work together rather than Evil Empire and Motion Twin, studios brimming with talent and passion, to deliver a new exploration-based 2D action game that captures the essence of Castlevania while bringing fresh innovation." Presumably, the excellent Dead Cells: Return to Castlevania DLC was somewhat of a pitch by the developers, and I'm glad it worked out.
