One of the biggest highlights of Spider-Man: Brand New Day, which is finally out this week, is Peter Parker’s (Tom Holland) web-slinging capabilities. Spidey is swinging ninjas and Hulks around like he entered a cheat code this time around, which makes sense now that Tom Holland himself revealed the Insomniac Spider-Man games have heavily influenced how his wall-crawling alter-ego fights in the new movie. The game series has also proved to be a nice bit of therapy during his globe-trotting stint promoting the film.
“I was actually playing the game last night,” Holland confessed to IGN while attending the premiere. “I couldn’t sleep last night; I was so excited about today. I was trying to figure out what I was gonna do, and I was like, ‘I’ll just throw the game on and have some fun.’”
When it comes to taking tips from Insominiac’s Spidey, though, Holland revealed that a lot of how his Spidey ends his fights was influenced by the PlayStation franchise. “For me, a lot of those finishing moves, a lot of our stuff was influenced by that stuff.”
Holland wasn’t the only gamer taking notes from the video game series, either. Director Destin Daniel Cretton revealed that a lot of the stunt team were trying to bring some of Spidey’s thwipping, flipping button combo moves to life in the new movie.
“A lot of the action designers and stunt people we had were huge gamers,” revealed Cretton. “They were able to experience things in those games that made them excited, and they would just screengrab the moves they really liked and bring them into the writers’ room and show it to me. And then we’d be like, ‘Yeah, that’s sick. Let’s try to figure out how to do that for real.’”
