Robert Downey Jr.'s MCU return as Doctor Doom in Avengers: Doomsday has already caused some concern among a passionate Marvel audience.
While some of those fears have been dampened in recent months, the reveal of Downey Jr.'s Doctor Doom voice – with a heavy fictional Latverian accent – in a recent trailer proved divisive among fans, with some even comparing it to a bad Dracula impression.
Now, Avengers: Doomsday directors Joe and Anthony Russo have revealed the surprisingly low-key origins behind the Doom voice – and their own reaction to the one-time Iron Man actor's take on how the supervillain should sound.
“That was something that Robert surprised us with one day,” Anthony Russo told People. “We were talking about all the details of the character: the voice, of course, is a key part of it, especially in the mask. So one day I think it was in the trailer, we were just sort of talking about some ideas, and he broke out into the voice. And we knew at that moment, that was it."
Joe Russo added that he got "chills" from that moment, comparing it to the same actor's emotional Tony Stark sacrifice and 'I am Iron Man' callback in Avengers: Endgame.
“Robert tends to present a lot of those super memorable moments," Joe Russo said.
Another Doom complaint has been that the iconic Marvel character has arrived out of nowhere in the MCU with minimal build-up, which led to Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige clapping back by saying Thanos' path to Avengers: Infinity War was similar.
Elsewhere, a new range of toys has seemingly confirmed the surprise identity of the only hero who could be powerful enough to take on Doom: Shang-Chi.
Avengers: Doomsday opens in cinemas on December 18.
