The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is going to comfortably obtain the biggest opening weekend of the year.
According to Deadline's early figures, the starry sequel to the Super Mario Bros. Movie could open (across five days, admittedly) at an exceptional $160 million domestically in the US. The trade even suggests that number is "conservative." That's the power of Donald Glover's Yoshi, clearly.
That would technically beat The Super Mario Bros. Movie's $146.3 million opening weekend, though the Galaxy sequel has the added bonus of releasing on a Wednesday and carrying those ticket sales through the weekend.
It could still be dwarfed by the first movie's five-day figure of $200 million-plus. The Super Mario Bros. Movie grossed $1.36 billion in 2023, just shy of Barbie's $1.44 billion.
The Super Mario Galaxy Movie sees Chris Pratt return as Mario. The portly plumber is once more joined by Charlie Day's Luigi, Jack Black's Bowser, and Anya Taylor-Joy's Princess Peach. Newcomers include Benny Safdie's Bowser Jr., Luiz Guzman's Wart, and Brie Larson's Rosalina. Larson, for her part, has already proven her Nintendo street cred, as well as confirming the Mario movie sequel will be packed with Easter eggs for fans.
"When I watched the movie, it was almost just like this sensory overload of everything I've ever loved and played and watched throughout my whole life," Larson told Fandango. "I just felt bombarded by all the references, and every single frame is just filled with references."
The Super Mario Galaxy Movie hits cinemas on April 1. For more, check out the upcoming video game movies coming your way very soon. Then jump over to our rankings of the best Mario games.
