Brokeback bowls over BAFTA

Even a tuxedo-drenching downpour and a media pit slightly less intimidating than a lion's den couldn't stop Total Film from bringing you the latest news from tonight's BAFTA ceremony in Leicester Square.

George Clooney spent half an hour trudging along the traditional foamy red carpet but left for the after-show party empty handed. The Cloonster could only sit and watch as Brokeback Mountain rode off with four gongs, Memoirs Of A Geisha took home three, while Crash and Walk The Line nabbed two each.

Flying the flag for the Brits were Pride & Prejudice helmer Joe Wright, the Aardman team for Wallace And Gromit: The Curse Of The Were-Rabbit and Thandie Newton for her part in race-drama Crash.

Newton gave a tearful acceptance speech and told the waiting media that she felt incredibly lucky to have won and to have gotten the part in the first place. "I guess you should always be in awe of what you're doing - it was such an intense filming experience that our respect for each other was heightened. It's fantastic to be a British winner at the BAFTAs."

Philip Seymour Hoffman and Jake Gyllenhaal were both slightly more laid back in their acceptance speeches - Jake told TF that his attempts to get the crowd involved in his win were inspired by his love of hip-hop and the distinct lack of it in his limo on the way to Leicester Square. "How do you get to listen to it here man? I can't find any on the radio!"

Hoffman simply paid tribute to his other half: "She looks so hot tonight," and to his co-star Catherine Keener: "She's hot too."
