With Avatar finding its way onto DVD and Blu-ray next Monday, director James Cameron has been chatting about the franchise to the Los Angeles Times .
And while confirming that he’s prepping six minutes of extra footage for a Stateside cinematic Avatar re-release this August (no word if we’ll get that on UK shores), he spoke a little more about his plans for Avatar 2 .
“We created a broad canvas for the environment of film,” Cameron said. “That’s not just on Pandora, but throughout the Alpha Centauri AB system. And we expand out across that system and incorporate more into the story – not necessarily in the second film, but more toward a third film.”
Cheers for that, we like our information nice and vague. How about some plot hints?
“Part of my focus in the second film is in creating a different environment,” Cameron elaborates, “a different setting within Pandora.
“I’m going to be focusing on the ocean on Pandora, which will be equally rich and diverse and crazy and imaginative, but it just won’t be a rain forest. I’m not saying we won’t see what we’ve already seen; we’ll see more of that as well.”
Bringing all the latest movie news, features, and reviews to your inbox
Which makes sense both thematically and visually for a follow-up – with the first Avatar we explored the earth and the air of Pandora, we can’t wait to see what the oceans have in store.
Let’s just hope is doesn’t consist of a big underground bubble city like Otoh Gunga in Phantom Menace . Mermaid Na'Vi, then?
