The top Avengers that deserve their own video game

Features
By Luke Brown published 3 May 2012

We assemble a list of the best Avengers worthy enough to have their own game

When you purchase through links on our site, we may earn an affiliate commission. Here’s how it works.

While Captain America, Thor, Iron Man, and the Hulk have all had their chance (alongside newer members like Spider-Man and Wolverine), each with varying degrees of success, we figured it was time to give some of the other characters a shot. From long-standing members to recent additions to the roster, weve compiled a list of the best potential Avenger video games that have yet to be made. Lets start with one of the least super Avengers

Hawkeye

Hawkeye

For a Hawkeye game, wed like to see the character star in a first-person shooter than makes use of all of Clints modified arrows (explosive, EMP, flash bang, etc.), where you learn new trick shots as you progress. While most FPS titles arent known for robust melee combat systems, it would be key for Hawkeye since hand-to-hand is Clints secondary skill for ass-kicking. Imagine seeing some cooperative play featuring Clints longtime love interest Bobbi Morse, AKA Mockingbird.

The adventure would put Hawkeye on the road as he tried to hunt down his nemesis (and brother) Trickshot. Hawkeye would even stop in on some of Marvels famous locales like Avengers Mansion and Thunderbolt Mountain, and feature battles against the likes of A.I.M. , Crossfire, and the Taskmaster.

Black Widow

Black Widow

What weve got in mind is a game with the robust exploration and combat controls of Assassins Creed combined with the espionage action of Velvet Assassin. Players would be able to take a few different approaches to every mission, going in guns blazing or take a more silent-but-deadly tactic. For as strong a melee fighter as Widow is, she also benefits from the aid of some decent gadgetry like her Widows Bite, along with her enhanced healing abilities.

Natashas journey would span the globe, and find her hunting down some lose ends from her days as a Russian spy. Theres plenty of international intrigue to be had in the Marvel universe outside the confines of New York, and wed love to travel alongside the Widow to places like Madripoor and Latveria. Of course, thered be cameos galore from people like the revealed Winter Soldier, Nick Fury, Crimson Dynamo, and the second Black Widow, Yelena Belova.

Moon Knight

Moon Knight

Marc Spector, AKA Moon Knight, may sound like a Batman imitator, but thats simply not the case. Fortunately though, hes close enough that hed make a great star for an Arkham Asylum-like game that was just a bit grittier and more violent. There are a ton of great villains for Moon Knight to face off against like Bullseye, Bushman, Black Spectre, and (his own brother) Shadow Knight, and the combat and exploration would be very similar to what Rocksteady did with their now-classic title.

One of the more interesting aspects wed like to see included would be some levels that play on Moon Knights mental issues. Part of what made the Scarecrow levels of Arkham Asylum so interesting was the way they twisted and deformed the standard game world. Turning the tables on players would give the Moon Knight game some personality, and perfectly fits in with the character.

Iron Fist

Iron Fist

While Danny Rand himself isnt immortal, the power of the Iron Fist is a legacy power passed down through the generations to the worthiest champion of hidden city Kun Lun. The game wouldnt only feature some of the deepest and most incredible combat ever put into a video game, but it would also explore some of the great mysticism that makes the Iron Fist legend so great. We would even get to partake in the tournament against the champions from the other Seven Capital Cities of Heaven.

The best part is, theres no shortage of enemies for the Iron Fist to fight. By having the game take place across history, well get to fight against pirates in Pinghai Bay, invading Monguls and British armies, current era foes like the Steel Serpent, and the monsters and demons of the mysterious Eighth Capital City. Additionally, there are plenty of other heroes to include for multiplayer/co-op modes, including the next Avenger on our list, Luke Cage.

Doctor Strange

Doctor Strange

In our game, Dr. Strange would leave the friendly confines of the Sanctum Sanctorum, and delve into the realms beyond mortal comprehension to thwart the plans of his most hated foe, the dread Dormammu. Even though the game would skew heavily toward the magic elements in the RPG, Dr. Strange has more than enough spells at his disposal that a skill tree and leveling system would work well in the game. Additionally, Strange could even craft weaponry out of magic for those with intentions of close-quarters combat.

Those worried about whether or not Dr. Strange has a large enough rogues gallery to fill out an entire game shouldnt be too bothered. With characters like Nightmare, Shuma-Gorath, Baron Mordo, and Morgan le Fay constantly trying to kill him, developers should have no issue coming up with villains for the sorcerer to combat.

Luke Cage

Luke Cage

A longtime friend and partner of Iron Fist, Luke Cages skill set and origins as a hero for hire, make him a great candidate for a Final Fight-style game. The game could rumble through tons of famous Marvel locales without having to render them in full, and players could battle it out against waves of Skrulls, HYDRA soldiers, and other street thugs on the way to bigger villains like the Purple Man, the Wrecking Crew, and the Kingpin.

Best of all, this hypothetical game would be a strong candidate for multiplayer. Iron Fist could guest star, as could the Daughters of the Dragon, Colleen Wing and Misty Knight. All four would be enjoyable to control in a brawler, and their shared history makes them perfect playable characters in a co-op mode.

Daredevil

Daredevil

Matt Murdock came close to having his own video game once before, but things were just not to be for the blind attorney. Daredevil has long been one of the most interesting characters in the Marvel stable, and even though hes blind, we think the time is right for a Daredevil video game in the vein of recent Spider-Man titles.

New York may be a somewhat stale location for video games these days, but Hells Kitchen is where Matt Murdock calls home, so to not have a game that takes place in the Big Apple wouldnt be genuine for the character. An open world works best in this case, and Daredevil can get around a city almost as fast as ol webhead thanks to his grappling hook batons. Combat would be nearly identical to what weve seen in Spider-Man games, minus the webs of course. The game would even showcase Daredevils heightened senses by allowing him to slow time or track enemies with limited sonar powers, probably similar to Batmans Detective Vision.

Like Spider-Man, Daredevil has a pretty impressive cast of villains constantly trying to ruin his day, though his are slightly more mystical. From the ninja clan the Hand, to the psychopathic assassin Bullseye, to the deadly but beautiful Elektra, players would have their hands full trying to survive in Matt Murdocks shoes.

Nova

Nova

Players would suit up as Nova and prepare for the impending Annihilation event. It would be up to Nova to recruit the galaxys greatest cosmic heroes to join his cause in an effort to defeat in coming invasion. Featuring guest-spots from the likes of the Guardians of the Galaxy, Ronan the Accuser, Phyla-Vell, and Adam Warlock, Nova would have to convince these heroes by aiding them in their own quest before they choose a side. Much like the way Mass Effect will force you to sometimes choose one faction over another, Nova will have to make some tough decisions when it comes to putting together his team.

Gameplay would work out almost the same as Mass Effects as well. Powers for your teammates would be leveled according to your style of play, and side-missions and conversations would lead to more options opening up or closing depending on your choices. Including flight would certainly add a new element to the mix, but since many foes can also fly, the new dynamic wouldnt just be an advantage to Nova.

Ant-Man/Giant-Man

Ant-Man/Giant-Man

Granted, were taking a few liberties the characters power set, but that doesnt mean we dont think hes worthy of shouldering the burden of his own game. We just think hes the perfect bite-sized hero for a bite-sized game. Our downloadable Ant-Man title would invoke all your fondest memories of the SNK classic, and would pit a roster of Marvels biggest bads against the (sometimes) pint-sized pugilist. Getting to throw monsters like Fin Fang Foom and Devil Dinosaur through the Baxter Building would be extremely satisfying.

You would of course get to play as the other monsters against friends, and there would be different versions of the character to unlock as well that offered new move sets. Ultimate Hank Pym, Goliath, and even Scott Langs daughter, the Young Avenger Stature, would find their way into the game, and provide new ways to punish opponents like Kang and Klaw.

Vision

Vision

We think the combination of his powers of flight, intangibility, great strength, and energy blasts lend themselves quite well to a Zone of the Enders-type game. Players would assume the role of Vision as he tried to take on Ultron, who once again desires to eliminate the Avengers, and enslave the planet. The game would take place primarily in the air, and as the game progresses, players would unlock new abilities and powers like a holographic form or upgraded energy blasts.

Occasional guest spots from fellow Avengers like the Scarlet Witch and Wonder Man as they aided the Vision is his battle against his creator would be a nice touch, as would battles against other Avenger foes Ultron could recruit, like alien races the Kree or Skrulls. If the developer wanted to include co-op, there are several versions of the Vision they could include for additional players to utilize.
