Thor The Dark World Trailer: 10 Questions Raised

Features
By Sam Ashurst published 23 April 2013

The major mysteries of Thor 2's teaser…

Why does everyone hate London?

Why does everyone hate London?

Here it is, being attacked again, just like in GI Joe: Retaliation / Star Trek Into Darkness / Fantastic Four - Rise Of The Silver Surfer / Skyfall .

C'mon guys, give us a bit of a break. Just for one summer. No? Fair enough.

Still, at least the devastation looks amazeballs. Look at that weird giant black stalactite thing.

Is it a weapon or a ship?

What emotion is Sif experiencing in this shot?

What emotion is Sif experiencing in this shot?

Um, jealousy, obvs. LOOK AT THAT FACE.

The real question is - why is Sif so jealous of Jane?

In the first film, she displayed no hint of romantic feelings towards our hero (to which we say, why? LOOK AT HIS BEARD), so we're wondering why things have changed.

Maybe it's his new armour. It's pretty shiny.

How is that guy lifting a truck?

How is that guy lifting a truck?

Dude, look at that guy. He looks like an ordinary human to us. Well, except for the whole lifting a lorry thing.

Have the baddies found some way of transferring Asgardian powers to humans? Or are these the baddies in disguise? Or have the gyms in London just really improved since the last time we spent 15 minutes in one?

Though, actually, on a second watch, it's clear that the trucks are floating of their own accord. Stand down.

But this raises another question. Have The Dark Elves found a way to mess with earth's gravity? Now that's terrifying.

Will Odin's dark magic have consequences?

Will Odin's dark magic have consequences?

POSSIBLE IMAGINARY SPOILER ALERT

In Avengers Assemble , Odin uses dark magic to bring Thor to earth so he can chase Loki and punch Iron Man in the helmet.

But the thing about dark magic is, it's dark. Which means evil. Which means consequences.

And get ready, it's time for our usual moment of wild conjecture… it looks as though Natalie Portman's Jane is being resurrected here - does she get killed, then does Thor insist Odin use his dark magician (very Game Of Thrones ) to bring her back to life?

Then, does Odin eventually get killed as a result of his magical meddling, leading to the following...

END IMAGINARY SPOILER

Why is Thor saying NOOOOOO?

Why is Thor saying NOOOOOO?

Someone needs to make a new supercut of all the trailer NOOOOOs. Seriously, it would really tickle us.

POSSIBLE IMAGINARY SPOILER ALERT

We reckon that this particular trailer is designed to make us think that Thor is gawping at Jane's death, but we've got a theory it's Odin.

It's the only event that could possibly bring Thor and Loki together (say what you like about Loki, but he did want his dad's attention).

Which leads us nicely to…

END IMAGINARY SPOILER ALERT

What the hell is going on with Loki's hair?

What the hell is going on with Loki's hair?

Kidding, kidding. The big question in this scene is why Thor is asking Loki for help.

After all, he's only tried to kill him about a bagillion times by this point.

Still, we love the line: "When you betray me."

It's not "If" but "When."

Thor's finally starting to understand his brother, which is nice.

But seriously, we love Tom Hiddleston. It's so good to see him back.

And as Joss Whedon loves a bad guy gone good (Angel, Spike, Illyria in Buffy / Angel ), we wonder if we're being set up to see Loki as a hero with edge in Avengers 2 .

Or perhaps he'll get a redemptive death in The Dark World , throwing himself onto Thor to save his life.

Or perhaps he'll snarkily betray Thor. Again.

Why isn't Malekith the Accursed doing a silly voice?

Why isn't Malekith the Accursed doing a silly voice?

For a while now, it's seemed as though supervillains need distinctively weird diction.

Whether it's Bane's Winnie The Pooh doing Darth Vader voice, or The Mandarin's habit of… occasional… pausesssss, it's usually the voice we remember most from the trailer.

But here, Christopher Eccleston sounds relatively normal. But, admittedly, he's not the focus of this early teaser.

Maybe they're saving a big speech for the next one.

And, by the beard of Bale, he looks cool.

Is Jon Snow going to show up at some point?

Is Jon Snow going to show up at some point?

Lol, because it looks like Game Of Thrones .

GOT luminary and Dark World director Alan Taylor looks to be bringing the same epic sweep / gritty realism from that show to the Thor universe, which will make a nice change from the Star Wars prequel look of the original film.

We're all card-carrying GOT geeks at Total Film , so we're super-excited to see how much Taylor allows it to influence The Dark World 's dark world.

Are sisters are doing it for themselves?

Are sisters are doing it for themselves?

The Marvel cinematic universe hasn't been the most female superhero friendly, but it looks like Phase 2 is set to change all that.

Not only have we seen Pepper donning the Iron Man armour in the Iron Man 3 trailer, but the Thor: The Dark World teaser hints at a whole load of female empowerment* (*read: ass-kicking).

We really, really hope this is the start of a new trend.

Are these going to be the best battle scenes in Marvel history?

Are these going to be the best battle scenes in Marvel history?

Alan Taylor isn't just any old Game Of Thrones director, he's the only director who was asked to return for the second season.

His episodes contain some pretty amazing fight sequences, but on the evidence of this trailer, he's going to be upping his game significantly.

We love this shot of Thor landing his hammer, before standing up and ignoring the mid-air explosion over his shoulder. Bad-ass.

If there's one criticism of the Marvel movie universe so far, it's that the fights can sometimes be a bit cartoony.

Let's hope that The Dark World 's scraps are a bit more gritty.

Thor: The Dark World is released in the UK on 30 October 2013
