Puss In Boots tops US box office again

Dreamworks Animation’s Puss In Boots enjoyed a second week on top of the US box office after Brett Ratner’s Tower Heist failed to capitalise upon a promising opening Friday.

Despite sitting in first place after its opening day, the Eddie Murphy vehicle managed just $25.1 million across the board, leaving it firmly rooted in second place. Puss In Boots meanwhile took $33 million in a weekend that represented an impressive 97% hold for the swashbuckling moggie.

It was a tough week all round for new releases, with festive comedy Harold & Kumar 3D Christmas pulling in just $13.1 million despite its inflated 3D pricing. That was still enough to take third place, with Paranormal Activity 3 plodding along in fourth with an $8.5 million weekend.

Justin Timberlake’s status as leading man remained under the microscope as In Time added just $7.7 million to its overall take of $24.2 million, just ahead of Footloose , which took $4.5 million in sixth place.

Real Steel looks likely to fall short of the $100 million mark, a $3.4 million weekend sending its overall take up to 78.7 million, while The Rum Diary endured another miserable weekend with just 2.98 million. The Ides Of March and Moneyball complete the top ten with $2 million and $1.97 million respectively.

Another slow weekend then, although that could change next week with the arrival of 3D fight-fest Immortals alongside Clint Eastwood’s biopic J. Edgar . And of course, there’s also the prospect of Adam Sandler playing twins in Jack And Jill …
