Mario and friends in the real world

Can’t wait for the 3DS? Own a pair of old-fashioned blue-and-red 3D glasses? Have a look at the Mario Kart video below. It works even better if you squint and cross your eyes as well. Warning – may cause headaches and/or blindness. Enjoy!

1) Super Mario graffiti speedrun

If for any reason you missed this before, it’s a must see now (and worth a second look for those who already caught it). This is an absolutely incredible piece of animation and special effects. It’s part of a university thesis, for which we assume the creator, Andreas Heikaus, got a first. He’s also a done a brief ‘making of’ film detailing the effort and ingenuity that went into its creation.

2) Mario Kart in 3D

Get a sneak preview of 3DS with this rendering of Mario Kart 64 via YouTube’s fledgling 3D service. You need some red and blue glasses for the best effect, but there’s also an option to have two images side by side. You’re supposed to cross your eyes to see the 3D. It hurts.

3) Kirby in yarn

So this is how you make a Kirby out of wool. Sort of obvious when you think about it, but the effect looks just like the art from Epic Yarn. Wonder if it would work as well with other characters…

4) Wii injury

A short lesson in videogame safety. Always wear your wrist strap, people. The makers of this video also included a bonus feature on how to make a compound fracture – don’t forget to paint the marrow of your fake bone.

5)Amigurumi

Excellent knitted Nintendo toys here, including a super cute pair of Boos and a particularly adorable ‘Om Nom’ Kirby. Anybody willing to teach us crochet?
