Madden 20 update 1.12 patch notes: September update adds Pat Tillman X-Factor ability and Superstar KO mode

The Madden 20 update 1.12 is here for everyone's favourite NFL sim and it's brought some huge surprises. Regular patches throughout the Madden 20 season are expected, as just like with any sports title, there'll be updates whenever a new gameplay exploit is discovered, features need to be added, bug fixes rolled out… you get the gist. The Madden 20 update 1.12 should download automatically the next time you start the game on your console of choice, and it means you can get stuck in with the brand new Madden Superstar KO mode. Let's break it down play by play.

Madden 20 patch general updates

A surprise – and a considerable one – to begin with: the Madden 20 September patch adds a brand new mode. It’s called Superstar KO, and EA describes it as “an exciting new way to play Madden NFL 20”. Don’t let that generic soundbyte put you off though: it’s an arcadey mix of current and legendary NFL stars wearing lurid uniforms, where you draft a squad and then take to the field for quick, OTT matches with a maximum game time of eight minutes. It’s fast, fun, a bit silly and completely free if you already own Madden 20 – so well worth a punt if you miss the NFL Street years.

As for Madden 20 proper, one notable addition is a new superstar ability called ‘Return Man’. Those fleet-footed players assigned this ability can swiftly change direction and adjust their momentum while returning punts or kicks, without sacrificing their general speed. It’s available immediately in Play Now matches, and coming soon to Franchise and Ultimate Team.

A Pat Tillman inspired X-Factor ability has also been added, called ‘Selfless’. Once triggered it puts both the player with the ability and all his team-mates ‘in the zone’ for a limited time, boosting their defensive stats. A national hero, Tillman gave up his NFL career in 2002 to enlist in the US Army, and was tragically killed in Afghanistan 2004. While a member of the Arizona Cardinals he was famed for raising the game of those around him, hence the specifics of this X-Factor ability.

Smaller gameplay changes from the September patch include a fix to a bug where the ball would be spotted incorrectly after a Holding penalty; a decrease in the number of successful ‘hit stick’ tackles; increased reaction times for defenders in zone coverage; and the removal of a bug which sometimes prevented the QB being tackled behind the line of scrimmage while scrambling.

Madden 20 patch franchise updates

Incremental stuff in this category, for now. EA says it’s “fixed an issue preventing users from resuming leagues after creating a league via Play Now Live and getting disconnected from the server due to inactivity.” And also: “fixed an issue causing the main menu to show a ‘Corrupt File’ message when trying to load a saved league from the Main Menu tile.” Expect more significant tweaks come October or November.

Madden 20 patch presentation updates

Like all modern sports sims Madden 20 player faces are a big deal to its community, and the Madden 20 September patch adds three new ones. These are Oakland Raiders tight end Foster Moreau, New Orleans Saints safety Chauncey Gardner-Johnson, and Washington Redskins linebacker Montez Sweat.

Other presentation tweaks are less immediately obvious but very definitely there. Post-play camera choices in online matches have been adjusted so that you don’t have to cycle through replays from multiple angles, and the music volume during post-match highlights has been increased. Various commentary fixes and updates – a department in which Madden is always strong – are also included.

Madden 20 patch Ultimate Team updates

Again, Ultimate Team updates are of the blink-and-miss-them variety in the Madden 20 September patch. Here’s the list – mostly bug fixes – as provided by EA:

- Fixed an issue causing the incorrect challenges to appear in the post-game screens in Ultimate Challenges.

- Fixed an issue causing some users to get kicked to an incorrect menu after the party leader would choose a new challenge in Ultimate Challenges.

- Fixed an issue causing the ‘Top 3’ players to sometimes show players that are not on the opponent’s roster.

- Fixed an issue in Squads causing users who had left a lobby to still appear to teammates as being active in the lobby.

- Updated item art to include the player archetype on the front of the item.
