GTA 5 fastest selling entertainment property ever, Take-Two says

GTA 5 is the fastest selling entertainment property ever, according to Take-Two's estimates. The game has brought in more than $1 billion in its first three days on store shelves, after selling more than $800 million on its first day.

The Avengers film surpassed $1 billion in ticket sales ten days after its release in the U.S. and most other countries, according to Guinness World Records. A copy of GTA 5 costs significantly more than a movie ticket, of course, and cinema sales aren't weighted nearly as heavily toward their first day as game sales.

So while this doesn't mean games are the world's dominant form of entertainment, it does prove again they can be one of its highest grossing. And in the realm of game sales GTA 5 is king, having beaten Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 to $1 billion by a very comfortable 12 days.

"Grand Theft Auto is a cultural phenomenon and Rockstar Games continues to redefine what can be achieved in interactive entertainment," Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick said in a statement. "We are incredibly proud of the extraordinary critical and commercial response to Grand Theft Auto V."

Long before that, I started pursuing my degree in video games by bugging my older brother to let me play Zelda on the Super Nintendo.
