Cannes 2011: Weinstein's pick up The Iron Lady

The Weinstein Company led a day of wild spending at Cannes, snagging the US rights to buzzworthy Margret Thatcher biopic The Iron Lady , starring Meryl Streep.

Pictured above, the film follows Thatcher and husband Dennis (Jim Broadbent) as she rises to power, smashing gender barriers in global politics and leading Britain into the Falklands war.

The Weinstein Co also picked up US rights to martial arts epic Wu Xia ( Dragon ), which premieres later today, and silent black and white film The Artist.

The latter, a French language production filmed in Hollywood, reteams OSS 177: Cairo, Nest Of Spies director Michel Hazanavicius with stars Jean Dujardin and Bérénice Bejo.

Dujardin plays a declining male star, who begins a romance with Bejo's rising female actress during Hollywood's silent era in 1927.

Also starring are John Goodman, James Cromwell, Penelope Ann Miller & Missi Pyle.

The Artist is playing in competition in Cannes, so stay tuned for our reaction.
