5. The Shining (1980)
The movie: Stanley Kubrick's haunted house chiller, starring Jack Nicholson on suitably loony form as Jack Torrance, a caretaker who drags his family up to an isolated Colorado hotel for the winter. There'll be mazes, corpses, bartender ghosts and uhh.. really weird room service.
Take a drink when: Room 237 is shown or mentioned. Tony is referenced. A title card is used. Jack's writing is shown or mentioned. Someone talks about the weather.

4. Withnail & I (1987)
The movie: The classic drinking movie. Without the cult that sprang up around Withnail's copious imbibing habits, this feature probably wouldn't exist. Watch as Richard E. Grant and Paul McGann drink everything in the world.
Take a drink when: Withnail does, and see if you can make it past the first half hour.

3. The Big Lebowski (1998)
The movie: A cult comedy from the Coens, in which Jeff Bridges' Dude downs White Russians as he works emphatically to be an all-American slacker. Expect the unexpected and you'll be pleasantly surprised by the brilliant characterisations, strange musical numbers and stoner philosophising.
Bringing all the latest movie news, features, and reviews to your inbox
Take a drink when: The Dude smokes pot. Walter mentions Vietnam. Someone bowls a strike. The Dude drinks a White Russian.

2. Marvel Cinematic Universe (2008-)
The movies: From 2008's Iron Man right through to last year's Thor: Ragnarok, there's currently 18 films in the MCU. They chronicle the live-action adventures of Marvel's comic book heroes. You know these movies.
Take a drink when: There’s a fight scene. Something explodes. There's a reference to another Marvel movie. SHIELD is mentioned. Stan Lee pops up for a cameo.

1. The Lord of the Rings trilogy (2001-2003)
The movies: Peter Jackson's majestic adaptations of J.R.R. Tolkien's supposedly unfilmable books. Hobbits, giants, wizards, and orcs populate this vast cinematic franchise - and most of them are quite fond of ale, actually.
Take a drink when: Someone drinks anything. A Hobbit talks about food. Frodo says "Oh, Sam". Gollum bleats about his "precious." Orloondo Bland does some eyebrow acting.
