The Game of Thrones universe is a notoriously unfriendly place, where everyone needs to watch their backs, lest they end up perforated with knives (usually wielded by those once thought to be friends). This web of betrayal is really pretty fascinating, especially when you step back to see who is the betrayer and who is the betrayed. It also clearly illustrates just how ruthless and calculating Cersei is, as well as how manipulative and well-connected Varys is.
