9 things you MUST know before the battle begins

To be part of the Halo 3 beta on May 16th you must have purchased the special version of Crackdown - the box reads “Includes an invitation to Halo 3 multiplayer beta” so you can’t miss it. In Crackdown’s downloadable content menu there’s a Halo 3 option, which went live at 1pm on May 9th, allowing you to download three playable maps. The Crackdown disc is also needed to launch the Halo 3 beta.

1) The maps
There are three different maps available: the dramatic Snowbound, the tight and intense High Ground and the luscious and green Valhalla.

2) Trip mine
An effective weapon for defending strongholds and surprising attackers in tight networks of tunnels, but it can be used in the open battlefield as well.

3) Bubble shield
This defensive grenade can be used by hitting the X button and is perfect for giving you breathing space when an opponent has the upper hand during a confrontation.

4) The new Assault Rifle
The Assault Rifle in previous Halo games was pretty useless, but it did work very well in combination with grenades and melee attacks - so Bungie was keen to bring it back. It’s made some nifty changes as well.

5) The Man-Cannon
Bungie felt the transporters that zapped you across levels weren’t that exciting, hence the Man-Cannon, which fires you across. But note that you’re vulnerable to lurking snipers while in mid-air.

6) New controls
New controllers allow for a lot of functions on the X button to be transferred on to the right and left bumpers.

7) The Mongoose
One of the new ATVs in the game, this is nippy and easy to handle, and allows for one passenger.

8) Service numbers
To improve team communication, these will be short and legible and hover above teammates’ heads.

9) Saved Films
The Saved Films feature allows you to watch each game, pause, rewind and change the camera angle.
