This marketing game rap is surprisingly not bum

3D Dot Game Heroes continues retro love-in with old-school rapping

There's something about the combination of marketing and rap that makes me uncomfortable. In my mind they are two things that are violently opposed and no good can ever come from them being forced together. So I'm a little distressed that this new video for 3D Dot Game Heroes (which is released this week) doesn't strike me as being excruciatingly bum.

I actually think it's kind of cute. An old-school rap about a game that celebrates old-school games. It makes sense. Yes, this is a rare example of marketing and rap unifying and getting along just fine. Like when the British and German troops stopped killing each other for a bit in World War I and had a game of football instead.

But let us remind ourselves of the car-crash horrors that can occur when marketing and rap are carelessly lumped together in the name of selling stuff:

We shall never forget.

GR US update:

Perhaps our UK brothers had not seen this classic commercial, but as our commenters point out and Matt acknowledges, the 3D Dot Game Heroes video is a very clear reference to this ancient Legend of Zelda advert:

We love this ad too much to avoid embedding it ourselves. Also, curious if 3D Dot Game Heroes is for you? Why not read our super review? Seriously, freaking read it.

I can see what they were trying to do, but they didn't pull it off. They fail just as much as the PSP dude did. They knew a marketing rap song would be terrible, they tried to make fun of that fact, but in the end all they made was a terrible marketing rap song. It's like joining a stupid facebook group for people who hate people that join stupid facebook groups.

"Your parents help you hook it up" I loved that

@BudokaZ Thanks for pointing out that it's clearly obviously based on an old Zelda rap. I clearly obviously didn't spot that and now I clearly obviously feel like a dick. This is the Zelda rap of which he speaks: http://bit.ly/aXIFfE

It's clearly based on the old Zelda rap, kinda obvious once it mentions 'your parents help you hook it up'.
