This. Is. SHINOBI!

The drought of ass-kickin’ ninja sidescrollers is nearly over, people. It took almost a decade, but Sega’s finally done the right thing and announced the a brand new Shinobi game, exclusively for Nintendo 3DS.

And it looks as if the House of Sonic’s learned a thing or too since 2003’s PS2 misfire. What’s that? A 2D Shinobi game displayed in 3D?! Oh goodness, it feels nine-year-old me is being tickled… Sega Geeks: Prepare to have your nostalgia rod dutifully serviced.

Shinobi’s one of the most underrated series known to gamedom, and as much as I’d like to rattle off a brief history of the series, Sega’s new trailer does a damned fine job of showing you Joe Musashi’s proud legacy throughout the years.

Technically, this new 3DS is a prequel starring the original Shinobi protag’s father, Jiro Musashi. But seriously, would you have been able to discern that if I hadn’t just told you? Looks like another one of those respectful “return to form” treatments Sega’s so big on these days, and that’s goddamn good enough for me. Now lemme see that bonus level, dawg!

They took away the realistic look, and gave it cartoonish graphics, not cool, then again, that's my opinion.
  • ThePrivateer - May 27, 2011 5:09 a.m.

@GamesRadarChrisAntista: Shinobi got pretty good reviews. Gamespot gave it a 7.6, and by GamesRadar logic, that's almost as good as Halo Reach.
  • Tenfey - May 27, 2011 1:25 a.m.

I had Revenge of Shinobi on the Genesis back in the day. I was terrible at it.
  • XLGirthMan - May 27, 2011 1:23 a.m.

The graphics look like Altair's Chronicles...That means they're utter shit. Seriously, this is inexcusable on the 3DS. It was hardly excusable on the DS.
  • FauxFurry - May 27, 2011 1:12 a.m.

That doesn't look like a sequel to Shinobi Legions. No Sho, no go. Maybe since Shinobi Legions' Kazuma is dead already, Kazuma from the Yakuza series can be his substitute? It's all from Sega so why not? ReCaptcha, I am aware that he is 'not poryeas', that guy is not a Shinobi character. Stop trying to confuse everyone with more spin-off character ideas!

@lilbuddha I think all the early adopters of the system, including myself, will disagree.
  • lilbuddha - May 27, 2011 12:32 a.m.

Looks awesome, but no one cares about the 3ds, sadly. Smart Phones have taken over the mobile market... its just a shame that there aren't many AAA titles for them. I presume because its so bloody easy to pirate them.
  • Maxstats69 - May 26, 2011 11:29 p.m.

@reson8er I was going to say the same thing. I never read any reviews for it but a friend of mine lent it to me back in the day and I loved that game.
  • CanadianBeaverHunter - May 26, 2011 10:58 p.m.

Sweet. Hopefully footage of the next Ninja Gaiden isn't far behind. The more ninja games the better.
  • Larinah - May 26, 2011 10:32 p.m.

WOOOOOOW. I was a huge fan of Shinobi III, so I'm definitely looking forward to this. It looks like they're really going to shoot for a great 3d experience as well.
  • GringoStar - May 26, 2011 10:26 p.m.

It doesn't look bad for an early 3DS game. Sure it doesn't have the graphical capability of being something mouthwatering or outstanding but it's a freaking Shinobi game. I wouldn't mind seeing this put out as 3DS ware either as it would definitely be worth the purchase. I'm hoping there's a PSN/Xbox Live port coming soon too...
  • city17fan - May 26, 2011 9:53 p.m.

    This is Lame!!!
  • Wazzle - May 26, 2011 9:27 p.m.

So this will be the third game in the Shinobi series titled Shinobi. OH SO CONFUSION!
  • GamesRadarChrisAntista - May 26, 2011 9:21 p.m.

@reson8er I sort of agree. I didn't dislike the game, but I wasn't in love with it either. However, it didn't do too well critically, and I'd imagine it did even worse commercially. Otherwise why'd we have to wait 8 years for a new game, ya know? Just want you to know, I was hatin' :)
  • reson8er - May 26, 2011 8:39 p.m.

"And it looks as if the House of Sonic’s learned a thing or too since 2003’s PS2 misfire" I am probably in the minority when I say this, but 2003's Shinobi was a fantastic game. I think it was WoW's game (the studio behind, Valkyria Chronicles Skys of Arcadia, to name a few), and to me really captured how *anime* style ninja's are portrayed. I finished that game (proudly, as its a very difficult game) and enjoyed Kunoichi, though I did not finish that.
  • Bawheidbob - May 26, 2011 8:32 p.m.

Thought it actually looked really good but each to there own.
  • powerpc127 - May 26, 2011 8:29 p.m.

The chime at the end sounds like the Intel chime.
  • db1331 - May 26, 2011 8:28 p.m.

Wow. I never realized how many Shinobi games there were. I remember playing the shit out of the 2nd one on my Genesis. And I disagree with QWERTYCommander, I think it has a cool art style. That last screen looks like a mix between Donkey Kong Country Returns and Okami, two great looking games.
  • QWERTYCommander - May 26, 2011 8:15 p.m.

The graphics look like shit. And I'm talking about 3DS standards. But since it's probably in the pre-alpha stage, I'll let it pass. Looks fun.
  • WarWasp - May 26, 2011 8:15 p.m.

    Wow first.Holy crap.Too bad I don't have a 3DS...
