The Darkness 2 dated for October, new trailer now playing

2K Games has dropped word that The Darkness 2 will be ready to squeeze the life out of PS3s, Xbox 360s and PCs on October 4th in North America, and October 7th everywhere else. The announcement came with a pair of fresh screenshots, official box art and this appropriately moody teaser trailer:

Picking up two years after the first game, The Darkness 2 finds series protagonist Jackie Estacado cooling his heels as the don of the Estacado crime family, while barely managing to keep a lid on The Darkness powers that caused him all sorts of grief in the original. Predictably, it's not long before this delicate balance is shot to shit, and Jackie is forced to give in to his demonic tendencies to strike back against warring mob families and - perhaps - the source of The Darkness itself.

None of this is really conveyed in the box art or new screen shots, but at least they're cool to look at:

Actually just beat the first one a couple of weeks ago and loved it, so I'll probably pick this up too. I did like Starbreeze though (Escape from Butcher Bay anyone?) Do we know why they didn't get tapped again for the Darkness 2?

@ jackthemenace I just don't see any improvement between games when it comesto cell shading. When games first started using it the look was indeed fresh and bold, but over time it's been used again and again and has lost It's impact. Take Borderlands. It looked great as a realistic looking game when it was first announced but was then changed to cell shading. When I played it it looked just like any other cell shaded game, bold lines and colours. If you take realistic graphics (like the first Darkness game) you get different looks. Take Gears Of War and Uncharted. The same style (realistic) but completely different looking games. I know you could put it down to the art direction but I hope you get what I'm saying. Like I said, I do have hope. Digital Extremes have described the style as "Graphic Noir" so it could look more interesting. Hopefully It's one of those games where the scrrenshots don't do it justice and it looks better in motion.

@Joe_F_Ugly ....So...that means you could care more? I was a little urked when I first heard the new voice, it sounds similar...but the tone is just all wrong.

@Redharlow: At least he isn't voicing the Companion Cube yet. @game-.-freak: I always like Cel-shaded games, they give stuff a more... Bold look. Although, I guess it wouldn't really fit in well with a horror-style game I've personally never really played the Darkness. I played the demo and found it enjoyable enough, but I was never caught. I might have the try the new one out, just to see if it's any good.

His ugly bag of snakes sounds like two lions.

The first one is still one of my all time faves... Let's hope the second is up to the job, the voice from the first one was better least he sounded like a new yorker

Really wish they would have got the original voice actor, he fit the character. But on a side note, that is the most bad ass box art I have ever seen!

    That voice actor FUCKING SUCKS.
  • Joe_F_Ugly - May 5, 2011 12:01 a.m.

I really couldn't care less about the main actor, but 2K would've crossed the line by replacing Mike Patton as The Darkness. I kind of think his voice is like a version of the iconic Bob Ross...if he rose from the dead and started talking again.

@ RedHarlow I'm with you about the original voice actor, he did a great job, and so did you by not typing "First". To the point, I'm really torn with this game. I loved the first, hell, I still do, it was (to me) the first truly "Next-Gen" game I got on my PS3 not just graphically, but in scope as well. I'm not sure about the graphics. I liked the way the first game was realistic but the cell shading just screams "we are just making sure you know that it's a comic adaptation". Cell shading never looks as good to me as realistic looking games but I hope this changes my mind. I'm also a little worried about Digital Extremes handling it as their own IP's aren't anything groundbreaking. Not saying they're bad, just not great. I really hope this turns out good. I've been looking forward to this for ages so here's hoping...

Ohh yeah. Can not wait for this!

Why is Nolan North voicing Jackie now? The old voice actor was just fine. At least Mike Patton is still in.
