@Cwf2008 People like you are the reason that the media is up in arms about No Russian. True, the notion that video games are hypnosis and people who play them are bound to end up mass murderers is complete nonsense, but the point of No Russian was not so that people could have fun killing innocent civilians, the point was to show you the disturbing horrors of war in a very visceral way. The fact that you're reaction was "hur hur, I just killed a bunch of innocent people, let's do it again." means that the art of this medium is completely lost to you. The idea that games are just toys is the worst thing the medium has to face. Just as with film and literature, not every work is created for fun, in fact many challenge the audience to think and reevaluate their pre-concieved notions about how things work. BioShock wasn't created so that people could say "Look how many little girls I murdered" and No Russian was not included in MW2 as a way to have fun. Both were designed to disturb the viewer and force them to question the boundaries of morality. It's a shame that it's ruined by people who refuse to get it.

  • gmilf71 - December 30, 2009 5:22 a.m.

ah dude I just KNEW COD4 and MW2 would be in there.

Ahhhh, such fond memories of Manhunt. I still play that game from time to time. A remake on the PSN would be amazing. Though the graphics were pretty bad, it's so perfectly made for what it was trying to achieve, a gritty and scary atmosphere that I would hate to have been a part of. Baseball bat to head and brain matter sliding down the wall, epic.

Wow really No Russian? That controversy is utter bullshit. You got a problem with murdering innocent bystandards in an airport in a VIDEOGAME?! Well for one thing u need to get your head out of the 19th century. And another thing, doesnt anyone remember that in GTA Vice City u could go into an airport and massacre civilians? Or in GTA u can massare civilians anywhere? In No Russian i not only killed the people i personally executed many. And enjoyed it. Cuz its a game. And only a game. And i like how the Japanese translated "remember no russian"

There were much more shocking moments than some of these. Hot Coffee was about 50 times more shocking than Stubbs' stubby dick.

God i love it when devs push boundaries! Excellent article! @ chrisda yea, i usually have to google it too.

Great article GR! I definitely have to agree that the Bioshock twist could be included in the list, although it's more of an o-shit moment than a shocking taboo breaker.

this article was GREAT, this proves that video games are indeed an art form and people who want to censor them and hold them back stop the medium from going forward, i love video games because they have the balls and the possibility to show things movies wouldnt

nice choices,i think its the people begging for mercy on their knees that is quite shocking. the most shocking for me and these did alot (especially dr salvador) but the biggest shock was hearing the irish guy on far cry 2 saying the c word, iv only heard that in 6 films ever and only 1 game.

Getting my head chainsawed off in Resident Evil 4 still makes me jump! @Yeager1122 Easy, kill Kaiden! Unless you're trying to get with Liara, then kill Ashley as insurance that you won't get with her. =P
  • Yeager1122 - December 29, 2009 8:38 p.m.

Great aticle but you should have included Mass Effect where you have to choose either to save ashely or kaiden.
  • NotBraze - December 29, 2009 8:25 p.m.

Good list, but I think that BioShock's twist should have been up there. Those three words will be infamous for a long time to come.

My dad almost didnt let me get mw2 because of that mission. Its a pity in resi 5 they censored a lot of the deaths. One of my main disappointments concerning it
  • caboose4400 - December 29, 2009 6:46 p.m.

great article i basically agreed with em all but i think you should have included the..... MEGA F***KING SPOILER!!!!!! ....part where ghost and roach die considering they were both main charicters and then boom they both get shot and then burned alive!!!(well only roach was)which left me gotng WHAT THE F**K JUST HAPPPEND
  • helix92 - December 29, 2009 5:12 p.m.

What I still don't get is why people get annoyed at some stupid stuff like a fairly small shoot out in Manchester Cathedral in Resistance but nobody batted an eyelid when you break into The Vatican and murder The Pope in Assassins Creed 2, great game though
  • GameManiac - December 29, 2009 5:06 p.m.

I wonder what will the years 2010-2019 bring us? (excluding the December 2012 Mayan prophecy)
  • chrisda - December 29, 2009 4:55 p.m.

  • H2A2I00 - December 29, 2009 3:12 p.m.

Great article! I agree that a lot of these things are shocking but the No Russian level was just put their to get some controversy and sell more copies.
