Team Fortress 2 is now FREE-TO-PLAY, “Meet the Medic” short launches

If you like Brink or Monday Night Combat, you owe it to yourself to check out Team Fortress 2. When it comes to class-based shooters, no one does it better than Valve. And now that Team Fortress 2 is free-to-play for PC and Mac, you really have no excuse. After four years, 200 updates, and countless sandwiches, boinks, and cart pushing, Valve announced Team Fortress 2’s new free-to-play status as part of its ongoing Uber Update. But that’s not the only good news.

Valve has also released the “Meet the Medic” animated short, which is a must-watch for folks who like lending a helping hand with steady heals. Check it out below!

Not everyone's happy. For those who bought TF2 before it became free, check this out: http://www.cafepress.com/stupidhats

I really love TF2, but I'm not a big online player (Beside MMO's) and not a terribly huge online-social person, so I didn't fit into the game well. Now that it's free, my boyfriend can easily pick it up, and I'm sure to start playing again. :D

Honestly the only bad thing about this can be rampant cheating or so. Online games need a community so it doesn't dwindle and dies. I liked the CoD comment, it's damn right, they're trying to enlarge the life of the online TF2 community, and people are freaking out. Wonder if those people are just waiting to open their wallets to Call of Duty Elite and whatever rip off Activision comes with next.

I cannot understand why this should be met with any backlash? If anything, this should make the game more accessible now.

Funniest video Since Meet The Sniper :D Anyway, I've had this on Console for a while now, and enjoyed it loads, and it's been announced that they're going to bring out all the extras and stuff for the 360 soon enough. So, is it worth waiting for that, or should I buy the mac version? AND, Will the fact i downloaded it 'for free' the other day mean I WON'T need to pay for it through steam when the Uber-update's finished?

I swear that Valve are racist towards the BLU team--in every single short that I have seen them make the BLU Team is always either the loser or in a position of losing. Personally I think that this is unfair as blue is my favourite colour.

The only thing that I would be worried about is people idle for items with a bunch of free accounts, or the player base will also be different with all the new people. But I am still glad more people will get to try such a great game.

To the pyro-mobile! This makes me happy. I missed the days when every server was just hopping. I think this is a great way to inject some new players into the game.

Have to check this out. I also hope that Valve is taking their time with the L4D2 DLC to make it really good.

New short. *wipes away tear of joy*

Quick question, do I need a good computer to play this? Mine's a piece of crap. I got the orange box for PS3 and it's mostly empty now whenever I look for a game.
  • AFilthyIbis - June 24, 2011 8:47 a.m.

@MNC No, I'm quite sure that is not the case. Free to play people get no customisation because they haven't found or brought anything yet. They do not have stripped down accounts. The only thing the differentiates people who paid for the game and those who didn't is one hat. I agree with your main point, but haters always gunna hate.

Well this is good timing for me. I just returned my friend's copy of The Orange Box to him yesterday and was going to miss TF2. Now I get to play it all I want, and even better, on my computer instead of the Xbox.

FYI, people who already own the game, or who spend any money at all in the Mann Co store get "premium" accounts. Free-to-Play people get stripped down accounts (like no customisation, and limited crafting blueprints etc). So stop moaning, you ungrateful bastards.
  • bigwill1221 - June 24, 2011 7:37 a.m.

Probably make so much money from mannco store
  • minimaxi - June 24, 2011 7:23 a.m.

yeah I'm one of those who bought (discounted, anyway) and didn't find it to my taste, but do I lash out against valve now it's free? no, I blame myself for impulse-buying. Those two words are the reason valve is so stinking rich right now ;)
  • Crabhand - June 24, 2011 7:12 a.m.

@nemesisuprising Microsoft doesn't publish Call of duty. I think this is a good move by Valve. TF2 is already a very accessible game and introducing new players will keep the community fresh. The people complaining about having to wait for items or pay now need a reality check. The TF2 community has a lot of generous players who are willing to trade provided you have the material, which you will if you play the game and enjoy it.
