Strider making comeback in 2014

Capcom has announced that a new version of classic 1989 side-scrolling action game Strider is due in 2014. The game is in development at Double Helix Games, who are also working on Killer Instinct for Xbox One. This latest game--a 2.5D side-scroller--was confirmed during Capcom's panel at Comic-Con, which is currently taking place in San Diego.

The game will feature all the kind of moves you'd expect from a Strider title, including wall-climbing, aerial combat, and plenty of sword slashing. According to Capcom, levels will be non-linear, and you'll be able to revisit them multiple times, using new abilities to access different areas.

The story kicks off when "Strider Hiryu receives orders to assassinate Grandmaster Meio, supreme dictator of Earth, who has plunged humanity into a dystopian dark age." Sounds pretty faithful to the original franchise.

There's a video of the game in action, which you can watch right here. Strider will be available as a digital download only on Xbox One, PS4, Xbox 360, PS3 and PC in 2014.

We seem to hit a peculiar situation. Looks great, the action looks great and it was said to be Metroidvania style. But the "Double Helix" name is what is starting concerns. There's justification for the concern, Double Helix has made a bunch of crap games. However there's still room for doubt. The Original team of Strider are helping out on this, and Killer Instinct is both Double Helix and Rare working together. Also my doubt is mostly because i have not actually seen any good criticism on Killer Instinct other than the generic button mashey complaint Marvel gets and the massive negativity for being an Xbone exclusive. But hey who knows,i could be wrong and it could be crap, or it could deliver and be good. As usual, the waiting game will tell.

YESYESYESYESYESYESYESYESYESYESYESYESYESYES!!! *explodes in hype* ... God you have no idea how long I have been waiting for this, hard to believe it's been over 10 years since Strider 2 was released and now after so long it's finally back as a 2.5-D sidescroller with a cool atmospheric presentation (in terms of visuals and music), that plays like the old Strider's mixed with a Metroid style map and upgrade/progression system. Hell. Yes.

"New Strider game!!!! And it's a 2D action game!!!" YAAAAAY! "The graphics are generic 3D polygons and it's developed by double helix" AWWWW! Did Capcom learn NOTHING from handing Bionic Commando to GRIN???? Never trust your iconic franchises to developers with dubious or mediocre track records >_> That said, the gameplay shown so far did look very nice and fast paced. But with Double Helix's name being attached, I'm tempering my expectations until the reviews come out.

To help ease your concerns a bit it's been confirmed that Double Helix is doing some of the development work, but the game is primarily being made by the original creators of the Strider series and Capcom Japan.

Well, that is definitely more reassuring. Though it's probably in Capcom's interests to stress that little detail out. I mean, I don't know if they've been in a bubble lately, but Double Helix is kind if a very terrible name to be associated with right now XD

Grin did a great job with BIonic Commando Rearmed. As for the other 2 games(Bionic Commando with black Spencer, and Rearmed 2), you have a point.

Yeah, I was referring to the 3D Bionic Commando, mainly XD

Strider blew my mind when I played the arcade version on an emulator. When a bunch of Russian guys combine into a giant hammer and sickle-wielding robot centipede? Hell yes. I also loved the PSone remake/sequel where I think the last couple bosses were occult/illuminati symbols. This looks like it brings a Shadow Complex, 2.5D vibe.
