Steampunk Harley Quinn, goth pirate, and Final Fantasy Fallout: How Sega thought of westernising Bayonetta

How do you like your gun-swinging, high-kicking witch protagonists to look? Happy with a figure-hugging catsuit made of hair that drops off a second's notice? Or would you prefer a big set of sci-fi boots and a long coat? Or maybe something more akin to a Steampunk Harley Quinn would be more to your tastes? Just revealed via the concept artist's blog, it turns out that Sega considered giving Bayonetta a complete character make-over back in 2008, a year or so before the game's release. The intention? Make her more western-friendly. There are six versions below, and barring glasses they're all a far cry from the leggy latex look she ended up with.

Are they any good? Were they even necessary? Have a look and let me know what you think.

Cheers, OXM!

I want them all in a new game. Those are fabulous concepts.

I would NEVER part with the Bayonetta I love today. All 8 feet of her. Why, oh, WHY would anyone want to take AWAY the catsuit that disappears when she uses magic...!?

I actually prefer some of these to the original... Just curious how would they implement her special finishing moves hair thingy with these clothes

All apart from the 5th look way too short. Im happy we got the Bayonetta we did.

I hate bayonetta. I think she's the dumbest looking character this generation. ANYTHING would have been better than the ridiculous design they finalized. So... they couldn't have gone wrong with Westernizing her. But mostly- it's the dumb beehive hairdo and the glasses- not the clothes.

Am I the only one who didn't find Bayonetta attractive? I found her tiny head and giraffe like legs a major turn off. I get what this game is about but I would have been pretty embarrassed if my wife had walked in while playing certain parts of it. Trying to explain to her how gamers are not all nerdy dungeon dwellers would have gotten even more difficult!

I wish Japanese developers would stop trying to westernize their games. We have plenty of western developers to give us western games. They should just do what they want to do. Part of the appeal of Bayonetta to me was just how Japanese it is! I'm glad they went with the design that they used, but that first one isn't too bad I guess.

Middle and bottom is the best, in my opinion. Better than the final design by far.

"cow boy boots and corsets are western right?" not that these design's don't look cool. i like top left and bottom middle the best would be cool as dlc (but that wont happen)

Glad they went with what they did, it seems to fit Bayonetta's style and personality best.

What a lovvvvvvvvvvvvvely tea party. Some of those are actually pretty good though it's hard to imagine now her looking like that.

I really wasn't a fan of her final design, so for me, any of these would have been better. Honestly though, if they just fixed the proportions of her head that would have made a big difference for me.

I like my Bayonetta the way she is, not that these are bad designs

Sega should have included those as unlockable alternate costumes. I like the look of those outfits infinitely more than gym uniforms and kimonos. If the crew at Platinum weren't so dead-set against DLC for Bayonetta, they wouldn't make half bad downloads. Those all beat out a red trench coat worn over a single leather strap across the nipples and dark leather pants, leather gloves and boots that J-rockband Inuyasha, pardon, Dante is tooling around in, though the right-most at the top or the middle bottom costumes are my favorite out of the lot. I'm guessing that ReCaptcha thinks that these suits make Bayonetta look as if she comes 'from yerhapar'.

me too the final product of Bayonetta is great as it is. But looking at the concept art i like the first one best. number 3 and 4 would kick ass on a Fallout type of game.
  • Clovin64 - June 29, 2011 5:07 p.m.

I like all of these better than the costume they settled on. I like the top-left one the best. Looks like it has a kinda Wild West vibe to it, and the hair is pretty. Personally, I'd love to see all these as unlockable costumes in a Bayonetta sequel.

I wouldn't have minded the first one, but the final product was perfect. Also, these pics are further proof that Japanese devs don't understand what it means to westernize.
  • angelusdlion - June 29, 2011 4:16 p.m.

Eh.. I would have probably preferred one of these designs.. I found the finished product to be so overtly sexualized as to distract from the actual game play.
  • sniperscope - June 29, 2011 4:07 p.m.

These outfits are pretty cool, but I like her the way she is.
  • bkoz117 - June 29, 2011 3:42 p.m.

Are those suits still made of hair?!? What shampoo does she use? Screw gunboots! I want hair that turns into lingerie-armor! ...not for me, I mean. For, uh, a girl.
