Star Trek 3 gets an official release date

Paramount revealed an early Christmas present for Star Trek fans this morning, with the announcement of an official release date for Star Trek 3.

The film is now scheduled to hit cinemas on 8 July 2016, two months prior to the official fiftieth anniversary of the venerable sci-fi franchise.

The news comes hot on the heels of the appointment of Justin Lin to the director’s chair, with the studio having moved quickly to replace Roberto Orci.

Having co-written the script, Orci will still be involved as a producer on the film, having stepped down from the position of director on account of “creative differences” with the studio.

No plot details have been revealed as yet, but all the key players from the crew of the Enterprise are expected to return for round three.
