Square Enix reveals Final Fantasy card game

Anyone who's played a Final Fantasy game knows that the only thing more important than saving the world from complete annihilation is collecting cards for your Tetra Master deck or finally beating that damn fisherman at Triple Triad.

Now, Square Enix has announced that it will be pairing with Hobby Japan to produce a real-world Final Fantasy trading card game that will allow fans to engage in strategic card battling without the hassle of rescuing billions of ungrateful NPCs from extinction.

Coming to Japan on February 25th, 2011, the cards will feature a cross-section of Final Fantasy characters including staples like Sephiroth, Cloud, Kefka, Lightning and others that appear to be linked to the franchise's Dissidia spin-off. The official site has also posted silhouettes of yet-to-be revealed characters, among them being shapes that look like Aeris, Riku and (we think) Vincent.

It isn't clear how the game will play (or if it will even be released in North America) but Square Enix has said that cards will take into account each characters' unique in-game abilities and skills. Meaning: if your friend plays an Ultimate Weapon card, you might as well call it a game.

I am totally sold on this. If its anything like in the Games, maybe even a little variation, it should be fun seeing all the monsters and shit like that from the FF universe.

Seeing that cards and Final Fantasy have never ever mixed without causing an immense rage within myself because they are all boring/not-fun-in-any-way/broken/unplayable/awful/time-wasting/absolute horrid shit, I have no reason to believe that this new FF card thing will be any different.

This reminds me of playing the playing cards mini-game in FFVIII. God, I was crap at that game.

Hm. I wonder how they're going to have 14 Cid cards, and 4 Biggs and Wedge cards.

Hahah when I saw this i thought it was just a dlc add on like Fable 2's pub games or even like That really brutal betting game in Knights of the old republic. Kinda cool though, not sure how it would do in North America though. And dare I say First?
